So, how about those vanilla GFX?

Use them all the time.

Does anyone here use vanilla graphics/items anymore?

Postby Ecruteak » Fri Jul 03, 2015 5:42 pm

When I work on my episodes, I use vanilla graphics all the time. Mainly because I don't know how to use CGFX, but that's besides the point. I think too many people are using CGFX now. Not that it's a problem, but I remember seeing a post that flat-out told someone that their episode lacked "custom graphics". So that made me curious. Does anyone always or mostly use vanilla GFX anymore?

Please tell me I'm not alone here...

I use mostly vanilla GFX. I know how to use CGFX (and sometimes, if I'm coding custom NPCs, I make minor changes like rotations or pallet swaps) but I don't have the art skill nor the desire to use CGFX (and usually I'm too lazy to find and download someone else's pack).

CGFX add a lot more pizzazz to the level because you can do so much more instead of being stuck with just regular vanilla GFX.

Now don't get me wrong, vanilla levels aren't bad. You can still make a great level without CGFX.

If you want to learn how to use CGFX, I highly recommend checking out Marina's "How to SMBX" thread: http://www.smbxgame.com/forums/v ... =35&t=9856

Vanilla levels are like pizza Margherita. They're pizza, therefore they're good (if the person who made it is good at making pizza).

Levels with custom graphics are like pizza Tonno. And everyone knows pizza Tonno is the best. Even if the person who made it is shit at making pizza, it's still enjoyable.

Yeah, even the best levels can pull off without CGFX. You don't need CGFX to make a level look good. Not using them can make a level look more like the "classic" style of SMBX pre-1.2.

Whenever I do, I don't bother unless I need to make something look pretty that SMBX doesn't have. Otherwise it's just used to compensate for poor design. *drops mic*

Since I use SMW always, that means I use mostly vanilla gfx in my levels.

Even though I make custom levels using CGFX, I would always prefer the vanilla levels because they give me a road back to 2009, when custom graphics weren't even thought of yet. I remember great levels from the Invasion and the original Great Castle Adventure. They made me think that a good level doesn't need custom graphics. About the topic, I mix vanilla with custom graphics because not everything needs to be all-new.

I sometimes use vanilla NPCs. It's rare that I use vanilla blocks/BGOs.

Compared to today's standards, those episodes are really outdated, but they've stood the test of time, and people are still playing them now (TGCA was my first ever SMBX episode). TI got a remake in the form of TI2, and so did The Princess Cliche, but TGCA hasn't gotten a remake yet, which is why I'm remaking the episode to give it a more modern SMBX feel and custom graphics.
