Was your first designed level bland? Be honest.

To be honest, the designs I made way back then seemed to be more creative than anything I do now. Sure they broke the general rules about clash and cut-off and some were kind of unfair due to enemy placement, but they seemed to be more original. Levels I make these days seem to follow more of the general trend rather than something different.

If I remember correctly, my levels were just something inspired by SMB3 and SMW and looked like that, except for the fact that they played badly. I used BGOs only if they were in the vanilla SMBX (I didn't know how to use custom graphics) and fitted in the level.

As a you asked...
This is my first level named "NSMB Level #1" (Deleted, but founded in ghosts). My brother (3 years old) messed up my level.

I do saw most of those Levels that the first ones are rather bland but let's face it. Even if it's bland doesn't mean it's entirely bad since you can always design a rather Nintendo styled Level of what they made in SMB, SMB2, SMB3 and SMW and still it Looks nice in a SMBX Episode. On my side it was the same case for having most of the Levels Nintendo based back then but on my own design and has pontential.

My levels were pretty bland and quite horrible back in the day. I haven't made a level in a really long time. But yesterday I saw something and I just got this inspiration to make a new level again. so Im currently making a level, which I havent done in maybe 1 or 2 years. I'll post it here once its done :)

For the first 10-20-ish levels I made, I had no idea how to extend sections. So I made entire storylines and episodes in 21 screens all the time. I'd say they were far more creative and diverse than anything "legit" I'm doing nowadays.

My first levels were made between late 2009 and early 2010. At the time, I considered my levels to be "cutting edge with level designs that are out of this world", but looking back to them, they're awkwardly made with bad level design.

My first level was a vanilla SMB3 grassland level from September of 2013. It had plenty of scenery, but since I was used to SMF, I tried to add some SMF mechanics into the level. Needless to say that wasn't such a good idea since SMBX is a completely different editor than SMF. Anyways, I actually posted the level here a while back if you want to check it out:

Oh, and hooray for this being my 2000th post! :3

Yeah, everyone starts out as a bad designer at one point.

My first level was a cave level which was completely disjunct in terms of the sections - an overworld section, then a cave, then a castle, then an underwater section, then a castle boss. As well as this, there was either too much scenery in some parts or not a lot of scenery at all, but given it was a cave level it was really hard to find scenery for it, so I had to use things like pillars and castle BGs.

^ This.

Nobody starts out as a five-star level designer. It just takes practice and experience to better yourself. Oh and when you post your level and it gets moved, be sure to take the advice of the reviewer/LJ! It helped me a lot, and I'm sure it'll help you too.

Actually, my first level was full of clashing BGOs. I might post it one day.

My first level I made was this SMB3 underwater level and it was a complete clusterfuck. Wish I still had it.

Absolutely. As a former Level Judge, I can't tell you how many bland levels I ended up judging. It got on my nerves.

Actually, the first levels I made were...not bland (it's mostly a redesign but there are a few original levels in there).

Also, depending on your definition, this could also be considered bland since it's really short and barely contains any enemies, coins, or non-flat terrain (its the first stand-alone level I made).

Well, I guess it's normal for a first designed level to be bland. Mine was (but I lost it.)

It was a really short overworld section with a brick wall in the middle, breakable by the Piranha Plant item, and there were pipes on top of it, leading to some sort of warehouse-sewer deal. It was very bland, with no BGOs and it lacked heavily in coins and enemies.

My current levels are also short, but they're better than my first. So as everyone else said, no-one's an expert level designer on their first go. Just keep at it and eventually you'll make it!

It is common be somewhat bland when you just start to creating levels, my first level was called "Green Fields" that I created in July 2013. Only I tell you do not worry about being bland when you're just beginning, just remember this: you will improve with time

My first uploaded level got a 1.8, does that answer your question?
