You know it actually is a Mario game, but it's not a SMB game, it's from the SMW "series", which then went over into the YI series, so technically he is still wrong..

The SMB series spans through SMB, SMB2/SMBLL, SMB2USA, SMB3 and by a stretch the NSMB series (NSMB, NSMBW, NSMB2, NSMBU). YI is part of the SMW series, which only spans to games (SMW and SMW2:YI).
Super Mario World is part of the Super Mario Bros. series as well - it's also called Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan. Yoshi's Island is probably not part of the series though.
