We might be able to program new guns in with LunaLua.

I think the best proof that it is already dying, slowly but dying nonetheless, can be found in the most recent community contest, specifically the number of entries. I believe about 40 something levels were submitted; fairly certain that the number did not go over 49. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that is the lowest number of entries ever in an SMBX community contest. Sure, factors such as time constraints and laziness might have played a part, but let's be real here, that number of entries is alarmingly low.

well, you're pretty wrong if you think of this as a sort of indicator. Joke levels were banned, which would automatically reduce the number of every other CC in comparison, and people were prompted to be creative and put effort into their entries, so we didn't have many levels from unknown one-time visitors like before. I also think that CC5 had a similar number of entrants. We're also awaiting around 200 or 300 entrants for the upcoming MaGLX3.

along with this, something else to remember is that this happened right in the middle of the school year for alot of people so they wouldn't really have time to make
a level for it.

I think a better question would be if you want it to die or not. It'll last as long as people actually care about SMBX. But yea, it won't last forever.

Why would one want SMBX to die? Or any community?
If you want something to die then you are an awfully irrational fanboy

I would say it depends since new users here joins the community which they'll grow up the community. While eventually some users here leaves SMBX, they might have a reason such as computer machine broke damaged computer, losing interests and so on.

So long as we keep the program, SMBX will never die. As for the community, it will always live on, as long as people play the game and communicate.

But as long as more people get interest in the game... the community will still here~

Technically, 2.0 (and it's complete version is still a good way off) is somewhat a successor.

They already killed it, it just came back stronger than ever. Now I'm curious if they'll try again or go straight for law suits. After all, would Nintendo really be willing to sue a fan for a project like this? Something created to show just how much we love Nintendo and its games?

The reality is that SMBX's longevity depends entirely on whether or not Nintendo choose to do something about it. Redigit tried to hint it was illegal when he asked users to remove all links to the game, even though some people will argue that Nintendo only wanted the domain name, when it is quite clear that he was told to stop distributing what is completely illegal. No matter what people say, he does not own the rights to the music in the game and anyone hosting SMBX could get prosecuted. Even the users on this site upload levels with copyright music. That alone could easily kill SMBX and put a lot of people in hot water.
Nothing has ever happened however. Users actually emailed lawyers in 2014 in an attempt to bring legal action into taking this site down, and Nintendo have been notified several times over the years too but they evidently do not care. That doesn't make it right though, and nearly everyone in this site is engaging in illegal activity, with easily accessible IP addresses. Considering the fact that these reports never amount to anything probably means there's nothing to worry about, but if Nintendo suddenly decided to take down this site, and all links to SMBX, well, they could.
