I'm almost done with this level, it only needs the boss to be remade.

It really looks good, but really, like you said, Mario should be 1x1 pixels because 2x2 and 1x1 don't look good together.

I honestly think that the player character is one of the exceptions to that rule. People are too accustomed to how Mario looks to change him, and as a controllable entity they are kind of supposed to stand out a little from the environment. This makes them easier to control and follow on the screen.

^ It's nice to see those tall slopes used too.
Some of those old Amiga games have pretty nice graphics. These were converted from the first world of Alfred Chicken.

It's the waterfall bottom. You can find that graphic in the 3-1 of SMB2.

Not really  I used friendly exit point NPCs which don't lag the game (I used them in my CC11 level also!)! But thanks, anyway.

Light Kaizo time:
Sparks = Lava
Kirby Spiked Thing = Spiny
(the lava around mario disappears after 1.5 seconds)

Well that seems good so far.
 
For some reason I finished this level in 2 days, it still needs a good boss though. My main focus in this level are pansers (which replace hammer bros), and since they're quite strong in general I've added many vegetables too (though for some reason there are none in those 2 screens).
