 Message of the Day: Okay so it's kind of no secret I died and had to hunker down to get through college. (Which I managed to, so 's all good.)
But like, I can't explain why the hell I don't keep on going with this. It's probably because there's a lot of reasons.
First off all these levels are awful. I have to brace to play shit. Second, I have to play a LOT of these levels, and it's amazing I can even keep my comments fresh. Finally, it's a lot of prep work and time spent...wait no it's not. It's about 2 hours if I manage to get through a tier from start to finish.
But have YOU spent 2 hours doing anything at once? If you do, can you tell me how the hell that's possible?

ASIDE FROM THAT, this level was okay. Goombas were bullshit but this volcano level did not go out of its way to shove lava in my face and I did somewhat enjoy my run through it.

I suppose if they're Luigi there's no problemo but anyone else can be expected to take 5 seconds for every multi-coin block. It's kinda ridiculous. So is the 275 coins in your level. Damn, 1-1 is pretty lucrative.
Other than that, this is a bland level of a different calibur. It varies the graphics and the obstacles enough to set itself apart from all those in TIER FOUR, but I'm still not feeling a lot from this level. Still, points for variety.

DarkMatt sez: This might be the first level in the contest that intrigued me in a positive way. This level shares a lot of similaries with the last level, however it has a much cleaner and organized theme, (not without its flaws, mind you, like the background and the three pieces of graphic that isn't greyscale does not fit.) and the obstacles it put up were interesting: not trying, but also timesinks. Asides aren't bad, per se, but they should be used in moderation. Spending more time trying bricks instead of playing the level means the pacing is pretty slow the first time around.
I would love to play more from you though. An episode like this I would find a nice pleasant trip down chill lane. You just need a little bit more experience with engaging the player and perfecting your level idea.

It's not just the graphics, either. This level, is a fucking mess. A diarrhea mess of NPCs, gimmicks, and art styles. It works so poorly it's disgusting.
The only thing I can say about this is that this level is so jam-fucking-packed with individual ideas given 0 thought past the initial implementation you can make a Goomba WORLD. That is, this level has enough gimmicks that you can split this one level into the 4 to 8 a world in an episode would normally have.
That's how big of a clusterfuck this level was.
Nowadays, most people understand why you should not go overboard with mixing and matching styles and ideas. Consistency is, usually, a valued aspect of mario levels.
Then there's ap3jmpt.
What an asshole.

DarkMatt sez: Mildly challenging, but I didn't feel any real gimmick from it. Makes for a good generic level, but I just could not feel the challenge it wanted to present.
Graphics I'm divided on. On one had, they work and the colors work just fine. On the other, it gets pretty illogical and cluttered at times. Detail and clutter are two sides of the same coin, so it's really just me frowning at excessive use of background graphics. It's not a bad style per se, just one that doesn't click with me.
There's also a couple of minor dirks but they're so minor I can't really bring myself to point them out.

Also, fuck you for putting the powerups AND coins into the ground. I sure do love playing roulette on whether I get something I can use or a piece of shit. I also love having to go through every piece of grass just to find the powerups. That whole future thing we're talking about? Why not put the powerups ABOVE GROUND? HUH? THAT WOULD'VE BEEN GOOD.

 Message of the Day: Why do all of you want me to be a contest judge?
Number one: I'm pretty sure this is obvious by now, but I really DO NOT have the time and effort to get these done by the time Valtteri gives his judges to get them done. I don't care about your awful levels THAT much. God forbid.
But the more important number two: I would have to take a completely different tone and style to my feedback. This thread is all about shitting on levels, and unless you all want to openly admit the level contest here is a fucking joke, people are going to get really butthurt over the shit I say about their levels. I mean this thread all in good fun and "take of it as you will". I can't do that for official contest reviews. I don't know why you think this translates well into that, but really, I wouldn't be doing much except getting a lot of people mad when, when we get right down to that, that is NOT my intention.
And it's worth mentioning number three: I'd have to use THEIR scoring system. You will get me to stop using the Wildcard category when you pry it out of my cold dead hands.
#45:

Scorching Skies

Gameplay: 4 / 10
Aesthetics: 3 / 10

Would it kill you to use colors other than shades of red/orange? No? Too lazy? Thought so.
It's not just the fact that EVERYTHING IN THIS LEVEL IS RED and only barely gets away with it because they don't blend together that well. This level has shitty jumps that are hard to do small and stupid hard to do as big. There's also really dumb misleading coin trails in a section where you're encouraged to think fast. Finally, nothing but mushrooms, in a lava level, only reason why I didn't dock off extra points is because the mushrooms stay still, which is a merciful design choice given all the other dirks this fucker did.

Familiar Stronghold

Aesthetics: 7 / 10

This is what happens when you are shit out of ideas so you literally just take a concept from another Mario game. Points for it not being literally a 1:1 conversion, but points off for having a really stupid jump, an unoriginal gimmick, and dumb boss fights.
Not seeing how one can make 8-4 better, because this fucker right here certainly failed to make me want to play his level over just loading up Mario 1 and playing that.
And a very quick aside just I have an honest question: why are you assuming we've all played the very first mario and got to the end of it? You do know there's some people who haven't, right? There are some people who aren't going to immediately notice you had no original level concept, right?

Valtteri's Space Mission

DarkMatt sez: Oh good, I've gotten back into levels that put me to sleep. This level had literally NOTHING going for it. Just throwing around some moving platforms and giving your level a spaceship candy wrapper does not make your level any better.
If there is one thing I don't hate about this level, is that the memelording can be 100% bypassed. I appreciate glitch4 allowing me to just, not have to care at all that I'm a shitty graphic fighting another shitty graphic.
Also Valtteri is no fucking hero what the fuck are you talking about?

Mouser's Slippery Stronghold
Who to Blame: Sewpah
Gameplay: 3 / 10
Aesthetics: 5 / 10
Frosting Bonus: 3 / 10

DarkMatt sez: I especially like how half your content is spent going around for ace coins, leaving me with the other half of a short as fuck level. Also great job conveying a "slippery" level, not an ice level, not a blue level, no just fucking cake frosting on the castle ground. I fucking love it.

DarkMatt sez: Foreground and background colors REALLY do not mesh well, and it's because one's excessively light and the other's excessively dark. It's not pretty to look at.
Other than that, this level did have interesting enemy layouts, but I just could not feel like it was really contributing to the level. That's probably because, while the enemy placement challenges me, it's FUCKING RANDOM. Seriously, I don't see much rhyme or reason to where everything is, and when I get stopped by it more times than a couple, it doesn't help.
#40:

Roy's Sinister Stronghold
Who to Blame: Ludwig von Koopa
Gameplay: 7 / 10
Aesthetics: 8 / 10
ROY'S OUR BOY Bonus: 5 / 10
FINAL SCORE: 6.77
DarkMatt sez: Here's a level with a good artstyle, mostly because this guy managed to keep palette colors consistent without it being monotone, or glaring. The dahes of extra colors help to break up how grey this level is, and there you go, working theme.
I want to say this level had interesting gameplay but it's currently just a couple of ideas suspended and stretched on a blank canvas. The level HAS gimmicks, and they ARE noticeable, but they just aren't really expressed. This is a shame because this level's kind of long but the level's gimmicks just does not break the generic feeling due to how little the author makes use of them.
Finally jesus fuck the boss takes forever. I didn't play this level just to spend a minute or 2 fighting SMB3 Bowser. WE're in 2016 and we still can't adjust health? What the fuck are you faggots doing with your lives?

Abyss Sea of the Cryptic Sunken Ship
Who to Blame: GameClip477

Aesthetics: 6 / 10

In all seriousness though, I was expecting bitter disappointment but by the time I could start complaining, the level was over. This could've been really grating to go find this author's macguffins to beat the level, but it never really did. Level difficulty also stayed pretty consistent and didn't get too grating at some points.
Much as I want to bite my tongue and accept this is a good level, it does play really slow and I'm still questioning if "collect X things in a big area to win" is something that can be done well in a Mario game.
I'll give this a pass, but I still never want to play levels by this guy.
#38:

Breaking into the Tower
Who to Blame: Chip Potato

Boss this time, thankfully, does not take forever, so that's a plus.
Really, if it wasn't for the fact that this person can't A: focus, and B: flesh out a level, this would actually be p gud. Too bad these are concepts no one understands.

I was expecting you to be more harsh on 39th (the abyss level). I personally hated that level, because I found it really boring and obnoxious with literally the whole level being fetch quests. Also getting hit by blue fireballs I couldn't see because they were on a blue foreground and blue background :v

Oh don't get me wrong, I hated its guts. But I just can't hate it like everything before it.
I think that's mostly because it's just really hard to make water levels more exciting than not water levels. As I said, before I could start feeling that way, the level was done. So it did SOMETHING right.
