It is true. Think on this: The story of Mario is: The population of Mushroom Kingdom is being captured and transformed into ? blocks or bricks. And Mario is destroying the bricks and blocks, killing the population. And don't try saying they didn't die, because if they didn't, something worse happened, because the only things that get out of the blocks are items that Mario consumes. Oh and another part of the mushroom kingdom population was also turned into goombas. Goombas that Mario kills in a daily routine. In other words, Mario is a serial killer without a single bit of mercy

On the topic of Mario being the bad guy, there's this theory that I came up with about two years ago, based on this idea. Obviously, it's just a theory, but if you're thinking about Mario being the bad guy, then it's worth a read.
