Was your first Mario game Mario 64, by any chance? Bowser was portrayed as the most evil in this game. He had a demonic appearance at the end of the game, he physically stripped the Mushroom Kingdom of its power, and even the music that plays against him is very disturbing (organ in a N64 game...oh crap) which befits him nicely.
"demon appearance" "organ music"
How does that make bowser have an demonic appearance? It's just a non real videogame creature rofl.

People are forgetting that Bowser was never designed to be scary.
If you felt like he was scary back then, it's because you weren't as good at video games and had a hard time beating him, which is why you were afraid of encountering him, which is what made him "scary". Also, most of us were kids when we first encountered him. If I was to play SMB or SM64 now, I wouldn't be scared of Bowser either, and if a child were to play NSMBU now, he'd probably find Bowser to be scary, too.
All a question of your point of view.

Yeah, Spinda is definitely right. Mario Party 4 was the first Mario game I ever played, and Bowser terrified me in that game when I first saw him. But he never scared me after the first couple of times seeing him. We were all kids the first time we saw him, so he scared us at the time.

Agreed. My first Mario game was Super Mario World for the GBA, and let's be honest, I actually got nervous when fighting Bowser. It wasn't just because I found him a little scary (it was my first experience with Bowser, and I was 6 or so) but also because of the lightning flashes in the background. Add in the fact that I didn't know how to beat him, and I was put off this game for a year until I figured out how to beat him.

Exactly, most of you are forgetting that Mario (no offence) is a kids game, remember that, of course Bowser isn't going to be scary or super hard, the games are portrayed for children, not teens or adults most of the time.

Nice assertion, I would like to know how you came to that conclusion.
SMW, SMB1 and SMB3 depict Bowser as a very formidable foe. In SMW its a lot more obvious they designed him to be scary.
Ofcourse terror and horror is subjective and changes over the years.
But now, Bowser is more of a comic relief.

Well, the designers never actually said "hurr durr he's scary fear him" through the story. He was never really scary, he was a strong foe, especially for young children, and as I said, they were afreid of him because of the gameplay.
SMW's fight isn't deigned to be scary, it's meant to be epic with the lightning and whatnot. And it was hard, which why kids were scared of fighting him.

That's because he wasn't really shown throughout the story.
In the SMW fight the background music and the thunder kinda implies what tone the designers wanted to give out.
Something freightning and formidable.

I think I speak for all Nintendo fans when I say we need a survival horror game with Bowser as the main antagonist.

How about playing as Bowser in a Wolfenstein game? Now that'd be interesting.

Am I the only person who thought that Bowser wan't scary even as a kid?
Not even SMW or SM64 scared me, I thought he was pretty ugly.
And yet, why does he have to be broken in every game and yet, he's easy to beat once you know it?
