You should add some more BGOs. Maybe make a Boo Mario playable, a King Boo boss, and spotlights like in Super Mario Galaxy too.

Good thing in this GFX : A lot of variety NPCs
Bad thing in this GFX : the NPCs haven't death effect. You should add them.

the purple fog background clashes with everything since it consists of only 1x1 pixels.

No! I went over this with Enji! I made it half size and resized it. Only a couple 1x1 pixels where the gif converter messed up, that's it.

you're better off with paint.net. There's a way to re-size a graphic without any lack of quality. It seems to be the most reliable to maintain quality. Also I've used illustrator before and it was annoying to use imo.
