I'd say that in order to be a true Mario fan you have to accept every type of level (excluding jokes). All you are allowed to do to assess a level is based on legitimate pros and cons such as cutoff or challenges, but not on type of level and whether or not you like it (except jokes, which then you don't need to praise at all because they aren't allowed here). Therefore you Marioheads kind of are fakers because limiting people in order to call themselves fans is not what Mario is about. You are trying to suck people into your movement by making people feel discouraged to do what they want and stick to the Mario path which the community have been always on for the past 7 years, or whenever it started, and to this day, but now trying to drive it off and send them on a more strict path of doing what was tried before, which is not what SMBX is all about. I think the meaning of SMBX is the same as Minecraft. And your #backtobasics are not being rated down for being #backtobasics levels but for legitimate reasons, or at least I hope. And stop trying to give the #backtobasics levels high ratings just because they support your movement, look and treat them like every other level.
And Miyamoto is not dead, he is actually very much alive. Iwata was the one who died, and it was only last year, not 2013.
Anyway, let's try to end the rantings and flame wars and accept every level posted, classic or not

Actually, I made
a timeline to link all the Mario games quite a while back, and I'm still updating it. I see the Mario games as having a continuity to them, beginning with Yoshi's Island, followed by the Marios being sent to Earth and failing to get a job, and then they enter the Mushroom Kingdom. However, it might be a bit more complicated than that, especially considering the ending of SMG, by resetting the universe, throws off the other games on the timeline.
I'd say that the timeline kind of goes like this: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island/Yoshi's New Island ----> Yoshi's Island DS ----> Mario's Early years (Maybe) ----> Donkey Kong/(arcade/gameboy/game and watch/NES)? ----> Donkey Kong Jr ----> Mario Bros (Arcade/NES/Game and Watch)? ----> ???
SO I think it is already complicated, and seen right at the start and unsure at this point but Super Mario Bros ----> Super Mario Bros the lost levels would probably be a good assumption.

So in that case: Super Mario Bros 3 ----> Super Mario World ----> Super Mario 64 (N64/DS)
OK SM64 could be come after SMW because if you collect every star, then you probably know that you access a cannon to reach the roof of Peach's castle and meet Yoshi, who remembers Mario and would probably not remember back like 20 years ago when Maro was a baby so the other game where Yoshi apppeared and was more likely to remember would be SMW. Unfortunately, with so many spinoffs and as Linik said, things are complicated. My timeline so far is definitely much different but there are problems like why Baby Mario and Luigi appear with their regular counterparts, and don't forget that the numerous fan games out there might also fit, where we could perhaps say that Super Mario 63 ends the timeline since Bowser is destroyed one and for all. But still, does not mean we have to be limited by this annoying #backtobasics campaign that did not need to be started really.
