Please note: I don't actually know the official release date of beta 4 - infact, i'm not sure anyone does. But we can estimate that based on the amount of work left to cover it won't be long. It will be this year though, i'm sure

It is currently expected to be released between April and June from the last time we heard the release date.

Jeez man, the stuff mentioned on the blog are things that didn't even cross my mind but sound like they'd be extremely useful in level/episode creation. Keep up the great work!
I'm especially interested in the back ground object editing capabilities. Can't wait!

Is there a way to skip past the launcher, straight into the game?

The launcher is where you select which game to load into, so... how exactly would you imagine would the game predict that?

You can however skip the launcher and go straight into PGE. Find the icon with a grey cat with builder helmet on.

by launching into SMBX's internal episode selector? The one you have to go to configure controls and play battle mode?

You can't. I believe they plan on removing it at some point and moving the other stuff to the launcher.

That sucks, I really liked the way it was presented. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but it felt really polished and almost like something you'd see in an official Nintendo game.

There's a blog post coming up highlighting a bunch of new launcher stuff coming in beta 4. Battle mode is returning in the future, too, with more features than ever. We have plans... ;)
Currently you're still able to access the old main menu to configure controls by loading into an episode and backing out to main menu. We're going to make control config less clunky tho.
When you said "skip launcher" I was very confused because SMBX 1.3 had 2 launchers technically: The launcher to decide between main game and editor and the main menu to choose an episode. That's... an extra step, not one less, so I ruled that one out as what you meant. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

It's all good, I only wanted to know if I could because front ends (Steam, Emulation Station) think the launcher itself is the game and close it when I choose an episode. It's also kind of annoying having to open and then immediately close an episode to configure controls.
I can't express how excited I am to see what beta 4 has in store. Keep up the good work!

I honestly would prefer to launch the game and skip the launcher to just go straight to the main menu of SMBX.
Often times, the launcher itself crashes upon trying to go into an episode, or it sits at a low amount of memory and does squat.
I don't have this issue with 1.4, at all.

I'm officially in love with the animation video. Are the speech bubbles an easy-to-use replacement for the usual npc texts in the blue window?

I don't think so. It's using a LUA code.

The word bubbles were done using my old textblox helper library. Said library was intended to replace the static blue message boxes with dynamic, customizable ones, but the thing ended up being a bloated, buggy and clunky mess. Not quite as bad as cinematX, but enough that the big projects using textblox have their own middleman code to make the library less of a pain to work with.
I've been chipping away at a successor, textplus, for a while now, and I'm gonna try and get a good chunk of it done this week while I'll be home for spring break.

Another blog post in a matter of days / weeks? Looks like we are getting even closer to beta 4!
Wonder what modes will be in the new battle mode. Coinathon? Kill the other player with items and objects? Capture the (flag / zone / object)? So exciting!
To be clear, the menu that is intended to be removed is the one with the orange background and curtains, where the players move?
Look forward to the blog post.
Oh and not related, but you know how Skewers are coming in beta 4? How customise-able would they be? Would you be able to set how many blocks they move before stopping? Would we be able to set their size? Just out of curiosity

There are 2 posts which are waiting on one thing each being done before I work on them.

Don't get too excited cause it's still a ways away. Battle Mode won't return in beta 4 just yet. We first have to sort out all of our playables and things in 2 player mode properly.
Taycamgame wrote:To be clear, the menu that is intended to be removed is the one with the orange background and curtains, where the players move?
Correct. We want to give as many customisation power to the episodes themselves as possible. We've made it possible for people to customise their pause menus and are looking to make episode-specific credits levels of varying length possible too. We treat each episode as a standalone game which you can plug into the engine and play. The main menu didn't really do anything in favour of that.

Asking the same question 3 times? :p
The customisability of new NPCs depends entirely on Wohlstand's speed relative to Rednaxela's. Wohl has been working on a plugin system fr PGE which will allow us to make a lot of things possible without needing users to write lua for them.
