You could put some herbs on trees that have logs (for secrets). Also the "log" Ninji is standing on, could be lowered on 64 pixels, so the player won't accidently die. And what's wrong with that waterfall?!

Well I tried putting it under the water... ill try to make foreground water (replacing an NPC)

Interesting how all of these start out with coins or special blocks and a small increase on the y-axis, as well as enemies which kill you if you just stand around.
