I went treads and then made the decision to finish a mask of madness before buying the bkb recipe so I could do more right clicks in a fight - which, if I may remind you, I got a double kill immediately after (killing Sniper in the process) and then made up for the gold I had spent on the MoM to begin with. My decision was not game deciding. I'm sure we already had a gold deficit of at least 5k. Icefrog and Valve are concerned with maintaining the competitive scene.
