Simply a reskin of various tiles, and yes, I know it's not greatly detailed, but i haven't got much experience with graphic design.

There's not enough contrast so they look very flat

Do you mean all those tiles or just a few of them?

What is the best way to make tilesets? The compiler tool I was using is good, but it is easy to make mistakes with blocks that are meant to go together. Is there a way to set out the tiles in a grid?

I usually just work on a large canvas so that I can see how things fit together and then export the blocks manually after to their respective files

I recommend a tileset sheet for making tilesets from scratch, and later importing them one by one. The importing step is a bit tedious, but you have a lot of control over arrangement and get a good overview. Here's a little template:

If you're using Paint.NET, you can add a new layer in the "Layers" window (you can open it in the top right with one of the buttons) and start drawing your tiles without interfering with the grid. The grid on this example sheet are 16x16 pixels, which is exactly half of SMBX's tile size. Since SMBX's graphics are at twice of normal resolution though, you can resize the entire sheet once you're done and start moving the tiles over to what they should replace.
Here's an example of how a finished sheet might look like. These are a tileset I made for the Make a Good Megaman Level 2 Contest game, and a rip of the crystal tileset from Kirby Squeak Squad:

I'm re-shading the SMW Luigi into SMB3 style, and I'll eventually reshade the 7 current sprites he has, you know, small, big, fire, ice, etc. I also may use this for my episode, but, not really sure. If anyone would like to help me with it, feel free to do it! Please do ;-;

I think the shading on the chin is a little excessive in some of the sprites

Thanks for pointing that out, I'll be sure to fix the shading when I get back into editing it.

Wasn't satisfied with the first 2, so here's the final rendition (hopefully) of an airship tileset/tank (Yes I will make tank wheels)tileset:

Airship and tanks tilesets always look like logs
Unless you add some extra details like metallic parts
