In addition to Sonic and Samus (especially Samus please), I could possibly see Mega Man being put in the game. He's strongly associated with Nintendo (though not a Nintendo character himself) and is a platforming character whose levels could be adapted to SMBX to some extent.

You know, Megaman would actually be damn good character to have. Although this community would probably fail at making good levels for how Megaman operates. But technically we sorta already have a version, being Link's Fire Flower form. So I bet that should be easy to incorporate permanently if they wanted to.

But if you made a Mega Man replacing Link, he effectively loses his cannon if he gets hit while upgraded, and will have to fight with...his fists?

No no, I am not saying replace Link, I am just saying the engine already exists for a character shooting a projectile in one direction. So utilizing this to make Megaman wouldn't be hard.

if it's Ness, I'll shoot myself, js.
I think it's Ness as well. You're not alone.
I'm agree also with Ness
There is a video of my inventory mod for who want to see but I'm not working for the update 2.0, i'm just messing around
but if someone want it in smbx 2.0 i can share the code
Maybe later I will try to add Warp Whistle item and maybe yoshi egg to spawn in game
I'd like to see Mega Man with these abilites:
"Small" Mega Man = buster only, no charge shot
"Super" Mega Man = buster only, charge shot
"Fire" Mega Man = Atomic Fire + Crash Bomber
"Ice" Mega Man = Ice Slasher + Gemini Laser
"Raccoon" Mega Man = Leaf Shield + Rush Jet
"Tanooki" Mega Man = Leaf Shield + Rush Jet + Immune to spikes
"Hammer" Mega Man = Metal Blade + Hard Knuckle
A lot of you guys are really underestimating what Lua is capable of. You're going to see a lot of features in these characters that you would think to be impossible.
It's funny since a lot of people's suggestions for features like Starman, New NPCs, world map music + events, keeping powerups even if you're hit etc, are actually possible now with LunaLua.
So, today's character made me wonder for the first time ever:
"Literally who?"
Not too keen on the character itself, it's like a sidegrade to Peach and an amalgamate with Rosalina, with vertical bombs replacing fireballs and double jump replacing hover. The thing that really saves this is the LEVEL DESIGN. It's being used for its clearly intended purpose and that makes it shine. Hopefully future levels for him will work like that too, and people won't try to give him classic platformer levels.
Alright, little bit I have to explain about Ninja Bomberman which raocow missed to point out:
There was this sign on the 2nd floor which showed a Toad head getting blown up by a bomb granting Bomberman another jump. Apparently he never understood this? Essentially this means that hammer suit and double jump bombs refrese Ninja Bomberman's double jump after killing an enemy.
