The shading is far too flat, it just plain out looks bad. Try to get some more texture in the sprites, work with dithering, different textures etc. especially in the slug.

It could've been good if it wasn't pillowshaded.

What Do you want me to do then? What kind of texture?
You can't just expect me to draw it SUPER detailed.
Not everyone is that talented.

I like the idea but personally I think that there's a little too much dithering, especially for (I'm assuming) a smoother slug-like creature.

shading isn't the worst thing in the world, but the outline is just straight lines. Slugs aren't that jagged, they're curvy.

Excellent work! I can't dither this well myself!

Not really WIP,but I wanted to show it off anyway:

NOTE - They are supposed to not have much shading, they are kind of a custom 8-bit kind of thing, but using a 16-bit pallete(SMB3)

That's pretty decent. I love the timber beams and that screw/bolt. It actually looks like timber, which is something I've never been able to get right. The fill tile for the cave itself is really cool too. It kind of reminds me of the ground tile from SMB:LL in a way.

yeah I still struggle with making wood too. All I really did was use the 2nd brightest shade and just randomly applied it to the middle of the wood.
