I don't buy this argument, to be honest.
SMBX is a game engine designed primarily for making Mario fangames. This much is true.
However, that doesn't mean other elements can't be included if they provide interesting tools. Even Redigit added Link as a playable, as well as various Metroid and Zelda objects. I believe he planned to add Samus as a playable too at one point.
Thing is, SMBX is primarily a game engine, with a focus on Mario games. However, there's no reason not to provide people with more tools if they can provide interesting things to work with. The Kirby blocks we added aren't Mario, but they have functionality that no block in the Mario universe has, and can provide new avenues for level design. The same is true of the Crash Bandicoot blocks that were added. We try to do the same thing for new characters too. Zelda is more focussed on puzzle gameplay than platforming, and Klonoa has a greater focus on enemy management than precision platforming. A hypothetical Sonic playable would be to focus on momentum gameplay, rather than precision gameplay, which, while still platforming, is a completely different experience.
SMBX2 is all about providing tools, and I don't buy the argument that we should not supply useful and interesting opportunities simply because they don't bear the "Mario" label.

I'm not sure if you've got my point. I already voiced the concern about the oversupply coming from a high amount of playable characters. Altering from simple platforming mechanics is commonplace, and a few characters from "foreign" franchises can do well for that, I know. I’m not against introducing Sonic specifically, and I admit that I’m dragging the discussion to a general issue, but I again admonish “less is more”. If you talk about providing tools, you have to admit that you won’t be able to work with an excessively large toolbox. The whole thing must stay overlookable, and if that's not the case due to an abundance of characters, gimmicks and universes involved, then I also feel that the name "Mario" isn't really justified.

I guess we should remove Zelda and Metroid stuff from 1.3 then lol. This argument has no logical base.

+ most of the npcs added in beta 4 are from mario games so thats really not a good argument especially since npcs are arguably more important than playables to your average designer lol

Agreed
This argument is stupid and comes off as an excuse to remove all non-Mario things
Since Mario will remain as the primary theme of SMBX, I don't think there is anything wrong with keeping the name. And then if PGE is to replace SMBX then it will be known as Platformer Game Engine. Would you be happy with that?

The ONLY way Sonic could even be a character is if the entirety of Sonic's physics are involved. A side-scrolling Sonic game has a LOT of three dimensional elements. As is, that is difficult to do with SMBX.
Throwing doubts my way? Sure. How about...
EVERY.
SINGLE.
FUCKING.
LOOP-DE-LOOP-DE-LOOP.
THAT.
SONIC.
GOES.
THROUGH.

It seems to me that Beta 4 is getting a lot of things that could just be added later after the essentials are done, thus making it take longer.
I feel bad for saying this though. But it is true. We could have nice Base Mario Improvements first, then Blerts, Sonic, Rinka specific gameplay, etc. later. In a Beta 4.1-1/2 or something.

There are certain essentials we're waiting on that only certain people can do. What, pray tell, do you mean by "Base Mario Improvements"?

Actually I don't have to admit this because it's not true. When it comes to flexibility, it's always better to remove limitations, however they may occur. The size of the toolbox is less of an issue than its organisation. We've taken steps to improve than in Beta 4 as well, so everything is neat and easy to find and use. User-end simplicity does not mean cutting out features, it just means making an effort to make those features approachable.

You can work with a really large toolbox - if you really think you can't then just limit yourself to a few randomly selected things and bam, suddenly it's not so unfathomably large.

I respectfully disagree. I think it's best the devs put every last ounce of the plans for beta 4 to be in one big release than a bunch of smaller releases. I personally don't care how long TBH as long as the release is a jump from the previous one, I believe the long wait will be worth it.

Beta 4 does have a lot of content, but it's waiting on a few particular pieces before it can be released. That's what is holding up the release mostly.

My avatar does not care and you obviously don't care to to listen even after many other people telling you the same thing. When you don't know how to code and refuse to learn the basics you're not going to be able to make Sonic rn

yeah good luck adding a 360 degree physics system to a premade game not designed for a 360 degree physics system
i mean you could probably add some momentum attacks and a more "flow-based" kind of gameplay style but nah no way you're gonna be able to recreate his whole "classic sonic" style
levels with that kind of character in mind won't really mesh well with a mario either, not for any existing levels, anyway

Please stop harassing the SMBX2 developers about this; they've been clear that they cannot use your help on this.

It is doable to make properly, but it is very difficult. This is why only a few SMBX2 devs are really capable of making a working Sonic. We CAN recreate the whole "classic Sonic" style, but is a long and convoluted process to do, and certainly not something a beginner can manage.
