Well, to be fair, when compared to SMB2 in Japan, SMB3 was a huge leap. For reasons we might not think of, some of the praise is justifiable.

That said, I can tell SMB3 still had its graphical and audio flaws on the NES. Perhaps being able to die even after defeating Bowser is also a legitimate complaint.

While the realistic colors of SMB3 are pretty to look at in most level, I think the fact that the palette is incredibly easy to use plays a huge role in how often it is used. Look at how many custom tilesets there are for any other game besides SMB3. Look at how easy it is to recolor SMB3 graphics and be able to keep the shading looking decent. It's the easiest to design in this case and using a lot of scenery while still not looking spammy.

So not only can the colors be appealing to most, but it's also arguably the easiest palette to deal with.

Meh. I like the SMB1 graphical style more. :o
  • More things (usually sprites, but occasionally tiles, too, like the "?" blocks) don't (ab)use black outlines as heavily.
  • I also like more what they did with Luigi's regular palette in SMB1 and SMB2 (blue-tinted green with red-tinted blue) compared to SMB3 (the other way around: red-tinted green with green-tinted blue. Ew D:).
  • I rather like the older designs of the enemies, too. Dunno why. Maybe it comes from playing SMB1 and messing around with the Game Genie in SMB1 too much...had tons of fun with that thing. :p

As most of us said, SMB3 has realistic shading.
SMB1 & SMB2 have okay colors but not as good as SMB3.
SMW is too bright and feel like a cartoon.

My reason is that I think that the Super Mario Bros fans remembers Super Mario bros 3 the best, so they feel nostalgia (That god dang brain hugger atop your brain that makes you feel fuzzy inside when seeing your childhood) for the game, so they make levels based upon their favorite. In my opinion, I prefer Super Mario World levels. ;)
