Rep system =/= Like system.
With the rep system you gave users the ability to directly say words to another user through the means of on uprep or a downrep,
some people took the downrep part too far and either abused it or got angry over it.
The like system would only give them the ability to "like" a post, basically showing their appreciation of something without having to make a post, as reghrhre explained in the last page. It would allow you to literally say "I like this" without having to make a post, and if someone wants to make a lengthy post or add some more constructive criticism to the topic, they can do that. The like system could also be a means of "I agree with this post" so what is said in the post isn't repeated because somebody agrees with it, this is most commonly seen in the arguments and debates.
It's a system where literally nothing can go wrong, giving us the excuse of "we couldn't handle the rep system so a like system wouldn't work" is asinine, because the rep system allowed us to downrep people, the like system wouldn't allow us to dislike posts.

Because we already do that.
You already do that but that would be cutting back on criticism, no matter how short the post is, someone is still expressing their opinion over the subject at hand. A like system would eliminate the "useless", short opinion posts of people further, so they can still express their opinion without having to make a post about it. The opinions and criticism are held in good morals, eliminating even the smaller ones isn't really that great.
