Because we already do that.
And I'm not saying you don't, but there's still a quite large percentage of people here who make useless posts all of the time, in spite of the rules. With a like button, they would have no reason to, unless they simply did not use the like feature for whatever reason.

I'm just saying it's worth a try.

Rep system =/= Like system.

With the rep system you gave users the ability to directly say words to another user through the means of on uprep or a downrep, some people took the downrep part too far and either abused it or got angry over it.

The like system would only give them the ability to "like" a post, basically showing their appreciation of something without having to make a post, as reghrhre explained in the last page. It would allow you to literally say "I like this" without having to make a post, and if someone wants to make a lengthy post or add some more constructive criticism to the topic, they can do that. The like system could also be a means of "I agree with this post" so what is said in the post isn't repeated because somebody agrees with it, this is most commonly seen in the arguments and debates.

It's a system where literally nothing can go wrong, giving us the excuse of "we couldn't handle the rep system so a like system wouldn't work" is asinine, because the rep system allowed us to downrep people, the like system wouldn't allow us to dislike posts.

You already do that but that would be cutting back on criticism, no matter how short the post is, someone is still expressing their opinion over the subject at hand. A like system would eliminate the "useless", short opinion posts of people further, so they can still express their opinion without having to make a post about it. The opinions and criticism are held in good morals, eliminating even the smaller ones isn't really that great.

...and that's not even what I said. I said I'm not adding a liking system because I think it's silly.

Yet, you don't know what the actual outcome would be if an like system was actually placed into this forums.

I didn't say "I think the outcome would be silly". I said I think like systems are silly. It has nothing to do with the outcome.

Why do you think they are silly?

The Mario Forums uses the post liking system, and it actually works out quite nicely. I know it sounds weird, and in your mind, you think it probably wouldn't work out. I thought the same too, but it's actually not as bad as you think it is.

Why not just experiment with it and see if it works out in the community. A trial, per say. Give it a month or two. If it's used quite a bit, and reduces spammy one word posts, keep it. If not, then trash it.

Because I don't like making discussion forums more like social networks.

"Likes" are pretty meaningless if you ask me. I also don't want to have to deal with installing another mod.

Going through the cumbersome process of installing a mod just so we can have an arbitrary like system that will automatically be removed once we upgrade the board software is not something I have time for. Sorry.

Haven't you talked about upgrading the board software for a while now?

:I

The reputation system has served its purpose. We added it to get the community to describe its grievances with other active users and figure out who was doing what when and why. We're in an age where we can generally trust people to not cause problems beyond what there is to expect, so that's why we've removed it. I do not see the reason why we need to go social networking when patting someone on the head and giving them a number isn't the best way to like someone. We kind of want you to show you like the guy by doing things other than voting "yes" and moving on. If you really think he's a good poster, then treat him like a good friend, instead of just going "omg i liek ur post". Besides, I'm against assigning people any number of popularity, and especially against allowing users to bail out of the system leaving the people who care not at all or too much about popularity.

Again, why the need for this? Just be a community. You don't need a number to show you're part of it.

The like system that Smogon uses isn't "just a number" like the one that YouTube has. It actually shows which users liked a certain post.

I do agree that he's lazy sometimes, but you seem to be oblivious to the fact that installing a mod is hard as hell. It's more than just going to the ACP and saying "install mod". You have to download stuff, and work with files (IIRC, anyway). That's just after he finds out how to do it, and what to do.

And tweak it so it works and then cross your fingers it doesn't break.

This is priority #1 on Joey's list: "Upgrade forum software." Until this is done, not a whole lot else is gonna happen concerning forum gadgets.

And that list isn't a top priority on the bigger list of things Joey has to do outside this forum.

I'm pretty sure you said on IRC that it is one of the highest priority things you need to be doing but you said you weren't going to do it because the community is "very disheartening" right now. I can respect having to do things in real life trumping having to do things on a forum, but don't make your excuse for not doing it being "having a very disheartening community".
