Episode 4 – Time Has Come Again
As if living in an instant replay, Enjl was now reliving Superiorstar’s lecture back in time. The only thing he could think of was to go through it like it was an extreme case of de ja vu. Superiorstar was rambling just as he was when Enjl woke from his nightmare, which was when Enjl took out his camera once more to take a selfie and continue the scene. Somehow or another, Enjl’s life was turned back a page and now he must catch up.
“Shh shh shh Enjl appears to have taken what you kids call a selfie. A dumb word for a wonderful photographic tradition. And Enjl has a gift… Of course, as you all know, the photo portrait has been popular since the early 1800’s. Your generation was not the first to use images for selfie-expression. Sorry. Couldn’t resist.” Superiorstar said once again.
Enjl groaned. He remembered Superiorstar’s droning lectures, and knew that he was going to be put on the spot once more.
“Now Enjl, since you’ve captured our interest and clearly want to join the conversation, surely you can please tell us the name of the process that gave birth to the first self-portraits.” Superiorstar said further confirming Enjl’s time theory.
“Louis Daguerre was a French painter who created ‘daguerreotypes,’ a process that gave portraits a sharp reflective style, like a mirror.” Enjl answered this time.
Mable looked over in Enjl’s direction with a pouty look on her face. Enjl smirked after getting the right answer after being reminded in a prior timeline. It wasn’t all bad.
“Very good, Enjl. Someone’s been paying attention.” Superiorstar said.
Enjl glanced at the clock, and time was ticking. The lecture was almost concluded. Enjl decided to take advantage of his revisit of the past. Now that he wasn’t embarrassed in front of the class he looked around the class. There was no need to keep his head down this time. As his eyes panned the room he glanced at some of his classmates. Mable still looked pouty and bitter after not being able to interrupt and show off, Sorel was writing down notes but probably scribbling on his little notepad he always carried around, Jayce was doing equations in his “Science is art; Math is Music” journal for some reason, and then he noticed Aero was keeping his head down when a crumpled-up paper ball was thrown at him.
It looked like Aero was having a bad day, and Enjl recalled walking right past him without noticing. The clock continued to tick by and then finally the bell rang. This time Enjl would try something different instead. He avoided John Lennon quotes with Superiorstar, and instead went over to Aero to see how he was doing before continuing the timeline outside of Superiorstar’s classroom door.
“Hey Aero?” Enjl said.
“Oh. Hi Enjl.” Aero said quietly.
“Has everything been okay? You’ve seemed a bit under the weather. The level contest is coming up and that might be something to focus on.” Enjl said trying to make small talk.
“Yeah, I don’t know. I’m just tired of everything for today.” Aero said, still quiet and distant.
“Okay Aero. You take care, alright?” Enjl said.
“Sure, you too.” Aero said.
“Alright, I’ll see you around.” Enjl said, as he started to back out.
Aero put his head back down, resting on his arm over the desk. Enjl walked outside of Superiorstar’s classroom and then took a straight trip to the bathroom. He wasted no time with butterfly pictures and returned to his hiding spot and waited for the two to show up. Enjl looked to the floor where the bucket was. Oddly, the butterfly did not return in this timeline. This was far from the center of Enjl’s detention however. Enjl looked around and move the janitor’s other supplies out of the way. Behind the various mops, brooms, and other cleaning equipment a fire alarm was revealed.
Sanct and the girl entered the bathroom again abruptly while Enjl planned his actions. Peaking from behind the stall, Sanct was starting to get angry and he started to recognize this girl as his old friend Pyro. Enjl retreated further back into a corner, shocked that Sanct killed his best friend. He had to act to save her life.
“You don’t know who the fuck I am or what I’m capable of.” Sanct yelled.
“Oh shit! Oh shit!” Enjl kept repeating himself.
Pyro was about to be murdered in cold blood, and Enjl needed to make a split-second decision. Enjl looked back to the fire alarm. It was a leap of faith, but he pulled the alarm. The entire university was filled with blaring alarm tones, and Pyro took the opportunity to swipe the gun out of Sanct’s hand and get away after being distracted by the sudden alarm.
“God dammit!” Sanct yelled, stowing away his gun and leaving.
“Holy shit! I can’t believe that actually worked! I just saved Pyro’s life.” Enjl said.
Enjl left his hiding spot and began to walk out of the bathroom. He was met with an eerie feeling when he noticed the spot where Sanct and Pyro were fighting was empty. Enjl changed time and history to save Pyro’s life and the incredible power was beginning to sink in. He left the bathroom just as the University’s head of security was marching down the hall. Security Officer Aristocrat was patrolling the halls ensuring all the students evacuated the building safely, and noticed Enjl at the bathroom door.
“Hey what are you doing little boy? You should be outside with everyone else!”
Enjl was going to have to talk his way out of this one. His life was back in improv mode now that he continued without any more time phenomenon and shenanigans. Officer Aristocrat was a hard bargain. He was hard to reason with and if Enjl acted shady, he would be in a world of hurt. Enjl looked at the officer in the eyes, and was about to tell him everything he could make sense of.
