I also remember making a topic asking if that would be cool when I joined the forums, and it got locked because why wouldn't it be?

There's many systems like this, but not an NSMB-specific one. I've been considering making one though

Even if they'll be implimented in a way in which you don't need to write code yourself, the huds themselves would still be created using Lua.

I think you can do that in SMBX2.

For example, honey and water. Mario will take a lot of time swimming in the honey than water because honey is more viscous than water.

The ability to have an npc with custom graphics and the original one on the same level.
I basically want this, but with playable characters instead.

It's not really an actual gameplay feature, but I think having customizable shortcuts for the level editor would be nice. Would be especially useful if you constantly change the grid size just like I do.
World map events are also something I look forward to, because I really like the idea of having functional switch palaces, and an existing level being replaced with an another level provided that the player beats the previous course via a different method. I know that we already have multiple exits that allows for something similar, but sometimes, I just wanna make it so that two levels can't coexist together, especially if one of them is basically an alternate version of the other. This way, I feel that it would be possible to give your episode multiple endings and some replayability.
Granted, I've been obsessed with Sonic CD as of late... which would probably explain the second idea a lot. (bad/good futures and whatnot)

More dummy blocks for graphics and stuff.

You don't really need to quote the op like you did here.

You can do it with LunaLua (See The Second Reality Project X)
