Sometimes less "lol" or "good post" posts is a good thing.

Yeah but take it this way. Someone posts a level. People just rate the first post and give no feedback.

I think you can use XerX's argument to compare Post Ratings to polls: It's expected from people voting in a poll to elaborate on their vote in the poll, and whenever you see a poll around, the first post often reminds people that they should do that, to spark discussion and increase the poll's quality.

If we had a rating system for posts, people would just give a "like" or "dislike" to topics without elaborating, throwing the topic into the same situation in which topics with polls without disclaimer are. The person posting a topic would always have to specifically declare that "if people rate the OP, they should elaborate below", to get solid feedback on their topic.

Currently, post reply quality is.. decent, but if we throw in a rating system, we'd need disclaimers in every topic to even get the quality back to what it is right now. And even then: People will not stop disobeying.

This would imply people have common sense and wouldn't say that anyway.

I would place my bets on a reduction of useful posts. No, this won't remove all useful posts, but it should cut back on some...

A quick skim through any section, particularly the Graphics subforum, shows that fluffy, pointless posts are a common problem, and every one of those posts is followed by a mod saying "please make sure your posts are more constructive in the future," which is equally worthless and derails the thread further. There's no guarantee that Likes would discourage spammers from making bad posts, but I don't see the harm in trying. You can just disable it if it shows adverse effects.

That doesn't fix the problem with the people thinking that pointless posts are acceptable.

Also, a number next to a post, while a nice ego booster, serves the same purpose as people saying "yeah" or "I agree" and doesn't promote actually contributing to the discussion.

ya it serves the same purpose as people saying "yeah" or "i agree", yes, minus the post cluttering.

No, it isn't, because we need to get rid of people saying "yeah" and "I agree". Like I've said, it doesn't fix the problem.

I'm going to close this topic because we're not going to be implementing any form of post rating system. In the distant future it's a possibility that we'll see the return of rep, but not any time soon.
