You can always look at 8-bit games and study how they shaded things.

Any examples? (apart from Kirby's adventure)

Well, there is quite a few games that use simple shading, like Contra, Megaman and even the original Super Mario Bros has some shading at the very least in the terrain.

Ok, one last question, by shading do you mean adding shadows at the bottom of the tiles or adding lights at the top of the tiles?

Actually, both of those things, you could try to use only shadows or only highlights and see what you like best.

I think they look much better. It gives them much more depth.

Added in 1 minute :
with that being said, I think adding a shadow where the grass meets the dirt would be good.

I recommend using a darker shade of that creamy colour and applying it just under the grass. You could also try applying that shading around the edges of the dirt portion, might make it look more 3d.

Hello all and I'm back with the next update on my Paper Peach in SMBX2 project. Based on the feedback from the first go-around, I went on and applied some basic shading tips to the character and eliminated the paper outline. How does it look? Furthermore, does she look better with or without eyebrows? Moreover, when entering/exiting vertical pipes, is it better for her to be facing you or to the left/right (kind of like in Super Paper Mario, but without the character disassembling and reassembling)?

It depends on your preferences on how faithful you want your design. ^-^"

@FieryPaperMario I decided to make my design faithful.

The next thing to do would be to work on her jumping and floating animations. Would it be good to have Peach float using her parasol? Or, would that be better for the Racoon powerup?

Hey look, I'm starting working on the Raccoon Mario form for mah Gameboy style custom Mario sprites! And also, the way to tell if you're either Fire Mario or Ice Mario when I published them is by the feather on the cap*. ^-^"

Image

*To explain the "Feather on the cap" thing better, if the feather has some shading on it, you're Fire Mario, and if the feather is just white, you're Ice Mario.
