TL;DR:
But unlike with Windows 7 or 8.1, in Windows 10 a user who chooses custom settings to turn telemetry to "Off" isn't stymying diagnostics data collection. Instead, the choice reduces the amount of information Microsoft harvests from "Full" to the "Enhanced" level.
So yeah, no way to straightforwardly prevent the OS from sending this data on its own, not even an opt out option (somewhat "risky" registry hacking aside, from a normal user's perspective).

So I got Windows 10. Haven't really used it long enough to tell if I like it better than Windows 8, but so far I think Windows 8 is better. Then again it's my first day using Windows 10 so I guess I just have to get used to it.

Windows 10 is good if you like inconsistent design and spyware.

Microsoft's new 'going the google' route, and monetizing its users, partly in order to provide their operating system and subsequent updates for "free", isn't going to work with a lot of users, I feel. Would just switch to Linux fulltime, if I were more privacy-minded, already.

As much as it might make this easier for the 'one experience across multiple platforms' thing, it's not really worth it if the last computing environment where in general I feel Windows users retained some sense of an amount of (configurable) 'privacy' (in comparison to the IoT, services, and other things that collect data on a user to provide convenience features on platforms such as smartphone and tablets) is getting switched over to a more privacy-invasive computing environment that has a boatload of default 'convenience' features that a bunch of users might not really care for, when they realize just how much privacy invasion the trade off involves.

Of course, it's Microsoft and its partners that benefits the most from the data collection these features are laced with, paired with a new shameless fine print on how they'll handle it.

A bunch of these features, I'll admit might be useful or a "good" idea, in general for Windows users but pushing it down on the general population(there's no first-time-privacy settings setup menu that allows you disable these major settings, as far as I'm aware) is not a good idea, at any rate.

Lastly, I don't need to remind anyone about Microsoft's involvement with the NSA and their PRISM data collection program, I'm sure ;)

Use this guide to disable some of the available options, hopefully you don't really need 'Cortana' at all. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2489212,00.asp

Or if you're a gamer, m8.
Why? There aren't any major upgrades or improvements in Windows 10 specifically tailored towards gamers as far as I'm aware.

Didn't Apple like author their own alternative to OpenGL as they were unsatisfied with it or something?

no, they created coreimage as a layer on top of opengl. and then more recently, metal which is actually what you might be thinking of.

Well. My computer automatically updated to windows 10. It's not that much better than windows 8, but at least the start menu isn't screwed up. :) Also, the gfx for windows 10 have a lot less shading than windows 7

Wanna pull the quote from that article that says it's not free and translate it? From what Google Translate told me it's still free for life if you upgrade now.

Wanna pull the quote from that article that says it's not free and translate it? From what Google Translate told me it's still free for life if you upgrade now.

Here's the quote in English:

“Did you think Windows 10 was free? No, it isn't. Here are the reasons.
By Isabel Valenzuela

After a lifetime charging hundreds of dollars for their OS, Microsoft said that Windows 10 upgrading will be free, which surprised a lot of people.

Few of them knew that it wasn't completely free. Despite upgrading is free, you'll still have to pay for another important functions. We'll tell you some of them.

Windows 10: not as free as they said

We thought Microsoft started to follow Apple's principles of not selling each of their OS updates, but Bill Gates' company still wanted to gain some money.

You can now download Windows 10 for free from Windows 7 Service Pack 1 & Windows 8.1 (except some versions) with Windows Update.

You will get a huge surprise when you want to play DVD's in your PC because the media player that is normally included in Windows, now has to be paid.

That's right, Windows DVD Player has a price of $14.99 USD, something very ridiculous considering that DVD playing is an action that almost everybody does, and if they don't want to pay for it, they can download an alternative player (maybe better than Microsoft's).

By the moment, users that had directly updated to Windows 10 can download Windows DVD Player for free, else you'll have to pay now.

In Windows 10, Windows Media
Center disappears and Windows DVD Player might be its substitute, but why will we pay for something that was free in Windows 7? Maybe we'll find later more "mini-payments", that maybe will make us describe Windows 10 like
Fremium.

Who can download Windows 10 for free?

Everyone with Win7/8.x can download Windows 10 for free, except:
•Windows 7 & 8.x Enterprise
•Windows RT/RT 8.1
These are enterprise versions that include some extra features, and you'll have to buy the upgrade after a 90-day demo.

What to do if I have one of the versions listed above? Your only option is installing a more basic version and downloading from there. Yes, you can download from unregistered versions.

Microsoft announced that Windows users have a year to upgrade for free. Then, the OS will cost $119-$199 USD (depends of version). If you want to upgrade from XP or Vista, you'll have to pay the amount mentioned above for a license.

Do you still want to download Windows 10?”

How strange that my media player works without being paid.
