SMBX Teaches Typing

Postby Imaynotbehere4long » Sat Sep 20, 2014 3:16 pm

For those of you who have not played Mario Classic, there are three levels at the end that require you to cheat to progress. However, these aren't your typical impossible, poorly-designed levels; rather, these levels were built around a specific cheat in SMBX that you had to type in so you could experience the level properly. Personally, I thought this was a neat idea, but I also felt that it was a criminally underdeveloped gimmick: ignoring some of the cop-out level design choices, there was always the fact that a message box interrupted game-play to tell you what cheat you had to type in. What if there was a level where the player is told what cheat must be typed in, but it must be done within a certain time limit?

That's where my level comes in.

Basically, my goal with this was to make a level where the player needs to type in various cheats as they appear in order to reach the end (and there's some platforming in there, somewhere), as well as possibly inspiring others to expand upon this concept (I personally think that the end of my level is a cop-out as well, but I couldn't think of another way to end it). I tested this fully using a computer controller (meaning I had to set it down each time I needed to type in a cheat) and I never pre-empted the cheats (I only typed them in after they appeared on-screen), so this shouldn't be too difficult.
Spoiler: show
In what may be the most unintuitive part of my level, you need to freeze and destroy a Bullet Bill Cannon before being crushed by spikes.

As you might be able to guess, this screenshot was tricky to take. I just wanted to show that it is possible to destroy this wall without harming yourself (and still be able to beat the level), but it might not be optimal.

--EDIT--
One more thing that should be mentioned: if you type in a physics-changing cheat, like sonicstooslow, the cheat will still be active if you die and start the level over. That's something I couldn't work around, so I decided to put this message in my post.

Wait, why was my level moved to "Casual Levels"? I want a review and a score, dang it!!

--EDIT--
Thanks for moving it back (though I'd still like to know why it was moved there in the first place).

Design Usage & NPC Placements:
This one Level surely was very different from what I have been played so far from most of the other Levels. The whole concept of this Level is to actually type specific cheat codes on your keyboard that the Level tells you to do this while in a time limit which is a very unique way to do this in this kind of situation but the problem is as how you have to do this on a quick matter especially that the Level moves/scrolls by itself and for the first timer beings. If you are not fast enough you have to do the whole Level again but any physical-change cheats do remains in the main Game itself so you won't have to retype it that again. Still, not everyone is able to type that incredible fast especially for younger or unexpert/unexperienced players. About it's design, it is actually a mix of SMB, SMB3, SMW and other Games I do not know about by myself. The tile placements and usage of this Level was surely nice and the length of it is at least averagely enough for this Level or else it would of be a pain to do this again everytime if it was longer. The Music was to me a bit weird since I do not know anything related to it's theme but it surely fits for this kind of Level. Talk about NPC Placements, there weren't much in this Level. They surely have a nice purpose for showing specific point of the Level like the Coin Arrow and mostly time with a random Guy that is fighting with you and the other time with Message Boxes that are appearing every now and then to do the commands which I do like everything about the NPC placements even know there are low amount of Coins to collect but that might be just me overall for this Level. One thing I did noticed at the laser part, I saw that if a NPC dies to the laser, I can see red Lava spreading effect ("effect=13") coming up. Better is to completly hide it to prevent such weird things like that to happen. I do like the graphics you chosed out though but surely in a mixed way like this.

Overall Rating Score: 7.75

Pretty Good

That Level was pretty unique and it surely Counts as a specialized Level like this but the fact that you have to react very quickly to get further is a little bit of a killer for this Level especially for someone for lower amount of experience for SMBX like typing in Cheat Codes and get to the Level itself as fast as you can be.

I suggest to make multiple Levels for players with a lower experience related to this since not everyone can be that fast. You can make 3 Versions of this Level that the first Version can remain as it is while the second Version is for the average SMBX players and the third for beginner SMBX players so they can upstage the Level easily and also if they can get to the harder Versions at the future Times.

The song is properly labeled. You should see where it's from; I think you'll get a kick out of it.

That was actually supposed to represent an explosion of sorts, causing the blue SMB1 tower to lose stability and collapse when it gets hit by the laser. I probably should have sprite-swapped the graphic to better demonstrate this, but I guess it's too late now.
