It honestly depends on what tilesets are available. However, I can never design a good underwater level, and if you don't use cloud based tilesets, air levels can feel really empty

My favorites are snow, castle, and lava.
I absolutely hate making water levels.

I like to make smb2, castle, grassland, forest and cave levels.
I dislike making sky, water, and factory levels.

I like to make water levels, especially when they are combined with another theme such as forest or caves. I also like making airships, forests, ice, cave, lava, and sky levels.
I'm not that good at making factories or ghost houses. Desert levels can also be boring to design.

My favorite levels to make are water levels, snow levels and and cloud because they're so happy or peaceful!

I like making forest levels the best. Mountain and grassland levels can also be fun to make. I find it harder to make factory and sometimes water levels.

I WOULD like airship levels since they're hard but SMBX's autoscroll is so buggy it's like almost worthless. I like castles for the same hard difficulty. Don't like ghost houses since they're hard to test and find non-annoying gimmicks for.

Auto-scrolling as a concept is such a weak and artificial limitation on the player that I probably wouldn't ever bother using it anyway. I'm not one for adhering to tradition when it's not necessary.
I actually like ghost houses when they're done really well, when they're intuitive in a way that encourages the player to actually think. It's also fun to watch as303298 get pissed off at them.

Personally I love making castle/dungeon/boss battles. I'm not sure why but they just come natural for me. Alongside some World 1 type stuff (eg, grassy grass land type stuff.)
The only types of levels I really despise making though are underwater ones, I find them useless.

Favorites
Cave levels - they tend to let me be creative with them like make a base or hideout, a cave of magma, acid, water, etcetera. For me, caves give me more imagination for what I want them to be.
Castle/ruins levels - same as above
Space levels - so much imagination is involved. You can do anything with space levels.
Least Favorites
Grass levels - they very little imagination involved and are heavily limited. Only best aspect of it having a day, noon, or night setting.
Snow levels - can be creative sometimes, but I hate it when ice physics are always present. They're even worse when there's just one small block over a bottomless pit since you're capable of slipping off easily unless you can maneuver yourself fluently and carefully
Lava levels - something I hate more than ice levels only because lava is often over utilized. Sometimes, lava rising up will make it worse depending on how the level is designed. Skull rafts are nothing I care for too much though for they just get pretty gimmicky

I don't have favourites to be honest, but I like to make levels with lots of gimmicks, even though I try to avoid that in my project because I want to save them for later, and it's pretty god-damn tough man.
My least favourite levels can be defined by two themes, Underwater, Grassland. As far as I know these are my least favourite themes.

Really... I don't like grassland levels (too boring to make) and underground levels (too much detail to add, once I've done its been like 3 hours!)
I like making Airship/Space Levels (lots of empty space = laziness) and island levels (you'd think I'd hate them as their what I hate about grassland and underground combined, but I actually like them!)

My favorite levels to make would have to be forest levels. They seem to have so much potential idea-wise and they're just so much fun for me to make, maybe because I can go crazy with the decoration and it'll still look natural. I don't like making underwater levels because they just seem really slow and boring to make, as well as test. Castle levels can also be difficult for me, but they're fun to make once in a while.

Castles and airships have awesome music selection, but my real specialty is grasslands and caves.
My weakness is water levels since its so hard to make the difficulty right without spamming NPCs everywhere.
