Chad's CC7 level, Magical Malice Castle, had fully-working authentic Snake Blocks, but to do it, he used a lot of complicated-looking event chains which can waste a lot of space - he assigned each Snake Block to its own layer and layers keep disappearing and reappearing in different spots to give the illusion it's moving. In its place, though, an invisible block appears so the player can walk on it.
As for the dark sections, they're made using foreground BGOs or artificially-foregrounded NPCs set not to harm the player, so they can cover up everything including the player. The lighter sections are made using a BGO.
