ABOUT THE EPISODE:

Reign of Blackfrost Spirali is the sequel to my first SMBX2 episode: Super Mario and the Star Prisms!

Taking place 8 months after the events of the said episode, Mario and Luigi receive a letter from Spirali, a cryohypnotist that they helped back then, who needs their help for a personal dilemma! But when they arrive to the snowy lands once again, they realize there's something far sinister at work...

This first demo of the episode features a total of 8 levels, all located within a region of Shivering Snowlands called Gelid Glaces! But there's much more that cannot be described with mere words! Play through the episode and find out the awesome stuff me and my team have been have working on since November 2024!

Hello everyone! It seems this thread is dead so I might as well revive it:

First of all, thank you to the people who have played the DEMO! I have received tons of useful feedback which made me realize there were a lot of things that needed patching. So, since the release, I've been working on a patch which fixes a lot of stuff, as well as nerfs and NEW additions that were planned but cut from the initial release!

The patch will be released VERY soon, as there are still a few things that remain.

But without further ado... Imma show some sneak peeks of what to expect from this NEW patch:

Some non-SMBX folks were puzzled about the wall jump and ground pound mechanics on the first level, so I added Guidance triggers to encourage talking to Signote and he'll tell you what to do. He'll also explain other mandatory information if you happen to forget them...

Spirali's aura has received a big buff from a simple purple-colored afterimage effect, to a full on aura, from Awakened Zero's aura in Mega Man X5! Also, if you have noticed, bosses now have healthbars to indicate how much health they have!

1-7 had suffered from a lack of indicators on the wind gimmick featured in the second half of the level, so with electro_kun's spritework...
Wind Socks have been added to indicate where the wind is blowing as well as which direction it's blowing from!

Rocchione has received new sprites at last! This was planned from the start but due to a lack of spriters, this had to be cut from the initial release...
But with the great help of VannyArts, we have achieved this at last! As told before, Rocchione is based on Articuno so her sprite mostly remains the same besides her head and wings. But her ice armor has received much bigger changes, which I prefer keeping it a surprise...

After some discussion, I decided to recolor the houses in 1-EX to the same boreal wood houses seen in 1-2!

Hello everyone!

I'd like to inform you that the long-awaited patch for this episode's demo has been released! The download links above have all been updated to have the patched full version and the patch download, as the initial release has been removed due to its unstableness.

Here's the changelog of everything the patch has changed/updated/added:

- Added a tidbit on how to change the characters in the starting sign of 1-1.

- Added mandatory Guidance triggers to various parts of 1-1 to encourage people to learn how to use this mechanic. (Also teach walljumping and groundpounding.)

- Made the third Star Coin of 1-1 much easier to locate.

Tweaked various parts of 1-2:
- Outmaways are set up to no longer catch players off-guard with their thrown projectiles.
- The starting area of the level has been tweaked to be more forgiving.
- The key gate is permanently unlocked if you do it once, to prevent potential softlocks if you happen to exit and re-enter the level afterwards. The key gate is locked again if you complete the level.

- Updated some of Signote's Guidance texts.

- Removed the key pressing text on the boss fight Guidance triggers as well as the later mandatory Guidance triggers, as seen in 1-6 and 1-7, respectively. (People should know how to use the mechanic at this point.)

- The Ice Swoopers in 1-3 have been made brighter after various criticisms.

- The ice chunks now fall slower in 1-3.

1-3's escape section has been GREATLY nerfed:
- The ice chunks now fall much slower to give players more time to react.
- Reduced the amount of Swoopers.
- Added a coin to indicate the hidden Mushroom at the second autoscroll direction change.

- Added light sources to 1-3, 1-5 and 1-6 to make things more visible.

- Added a new alternate track for 1-5. More info is in the main README text file.

- Expanded the section height of 1-6's third area.

- Some hypnotized Toads have been moved for more maneuverability in 1-6.

- Added healthbars to both of the boss fights. Now players can see how much health they have left for easier indication.

- Added Guidance triggers to tell that Spiral Saws and Grrols can be spinjumped on for better explanation. (More help for the non-SMBX people out there!)

- Reduced the spawns of Grrols in a certain section of 1-7's first area.

- Added wind socks to the third and fourth areas of 1-7, as better indicators for wind direction and whether the wind is blowing or not. Thanks to electro_kun for the sprites.

- Rocchione's health has been buffed from 3 to 5 hits due to a lack of difficulty on her part.

- Rocchione's sprites have been updated, thanks to VannyArts.

- The houses in 1-EX have been recolored to fit the houses in 1-2.

- Fixed a crucial bug in 1-EX, breaking the failing condition of the timer that occurs if timer runs out or if the player dies.

- Rewrote the Star Coin line at the end of 1-EX, as they have been replaced with Moneybags from SML2: 6 Golden Coins but I forgot to change it on release.

Hello everyone!

It hasn't been quite a while since the release of the last patch, but I decided to release a smaller patch with changes and fixes that were made after the last patch's release. So, the version of the demo is now 1.1.1.

The most notable changes made in this patch is that goal orbs that drop after beating the bosses now spawn on the player's location instead of on the middle of the boss arena. This was done due to next new addition that was made:

Now, the darkening effect that happens after hitting a Goal Tape/Orb exit (before the victory pose) has been removed! I decided that I wanted to take the approach of later SMW hacks like SMWCP2 with removing this crucial feature of the vanilla SMW, and majority agreed on its addition.

I had more things planned at first, but I decided against it and decided to store them for the next demo, which will feature the second and third worlds of the episode. Until then, I might consider such planned things for Star Prisms when I get back to that episode's full release development in the near future.

Hello everyone! It's been a while, but thanks to the playthroughs of various people, I've fixed more bugs and overhauled lots more things to make sure everything is finalized for the first world, so when we get back to later demos, we can focus on future content!

Anyways, here's the changelog for you readers out there:

Nerfed the escape section of 1-3 once again:
- The terrain is no longer slippery, so the player can maneuver around better with the autoscroller.
- The swoopers' hitboxes have been reduced to no longer catch you off-guard, as well as giving them light to see them better.
- The 1st and last Star Coins of the level have been tweaked to make them more of one-shot attempts to get instead of easy/hard challenges that people struggle for a long while.

- Updated the healthbar sprites to use Gate's healthbar sprites in his own engine.

- The Star Coins now save once they are collected, to prevent them from disappearing if you somehow start from the beginning of a level.

- The game now saves when you lose a life AND exit the level from pause menu.

- Signote now has text for some areas I forgot to add those for him.

- The secret Todd area of 1-5 is no longer pitch black and the exit is properly implemented.

- Removed some of the lazy blocks from 1-4 and replaced them with more fitting blocks.

- Added missing door effect for 1-EX.

- The sound effects for starting the game in title screen have been changed.

- The Outmaway Guard on the west exit of Shiverwood Town now has new dialogue when you beat Spirali and Rocchione.

The kill counter gimmick of 1-6 has been overhauled:
- The kill counter is now checked using a mapped table instead of incrementing a number, to prevent stacking kills on the same Toads.
- The Toads that the player "kills" are now despawned if they die or exit the level. They are brought back after you complete the level.
- Some GameData variables have been turned to SaveData variables to prevent the Game Overs from resetting them.

The progression towards 1-7 has been made less obscure:
- The map will now tell you to visit Shiverwood Town after you clear 1-6. Talk to Merlon to learn about Spirali's plan and follow him to 1-7.
- But what's this? HE has made an ice barrier to prevent you from reaching him? Then go back to Shiverwood Town, talk to Merlon again and he'll follow you there and melt the barrier so you can start the level properly!
