Don't want to sound impatient or anything, but have the new owners of SMBX2 been determined yet? Just curious because the poll ended well over a week ago.

Sorry for the delay with this! I can now confirm that alongside the release of Beta 5 Patch 4, MegaDood (16 nominations), MrDoubleA (also 16) and ds-sloth (11) will assume ownership of the SMBX2 development repository. The only other nominee who got close to their counts was sarn (10), but she didn't participate in the thread and thus we didn't count her as a candidate.
Regarding Patch 4 progress this week, it's mostly been centered around LunaLua repo pull requests and builds with some fixes I mistakenly thought were already integrated and wrapping up prep work for features that will likely get fully implemented after Patch 4. I'll be following up with Rednaxela and the release volunteer about the installer situation sometime next week. Until then, here's hoping everyone has an excellent weekend!

Yay! I want to express my gratitude to the old team for making this game. It’s been a great introduction to my coding journey, and the community has also been very welcoming and supportive with my progress, and I don’t know where I would be if this didn’t exist.

I would also like to thank the previous development team of SMBX 2.
However, I don't know who belonged to the development team of SMBX 2 so far.
I wish the new development team of this software all the best and that they will also enjoy their work.
Off - topic : @ Rixitic: I would like to kindly ask when you think patch 4 for beta 5 will be ready without causing unnecessary stress to anyone.

Petition to the new owners to remove every SMBX2 character (or at least exclude them from the basegame)

I don't know which characters you mean.
Regardless, anyone can be happy that these characters are part of the SMBX 2 base game.
If you don't want to use the characters you mentioned, you have the free choice not to use them.

All characters beyond SMBX 1.3 (Link). Reasons:
1. They weren't implemented properly in the base game, instead they rely on wacky workarounds, breaking one of the core functions of SMBX 1.3, the local multiplayer.
2. Nobody uses them, hence removing them will just break a few levels (that's why I suggested exporting them, so people that really rely on them can pick the ones they use and update their projects). It's been recommended to not use them since their inclusion, a rework of them is not gonna happen because it's not worth it, why don't get rid of them once for all?
3. They slow down the game. They're always loaded whenever a level loads, making load times unnecessarily longer. I made a copy of my own X2, carefully removed the characters and the loading times were notably faster (on my experiment I set their references to nil, I know it's more complicated than that but it's worth exploring how much performance can be increased).
4. They may alienate new users. They're still in the base game and are easily accesible like any other feature is (they being in the pause menu is straight up intrusive if you ask me), so it's fair to recognize the weight they have into the game. The truth is, they're a kind of a selling point (especially back in Beta 3) and new people will try them out and have a bad impression of the game. Doesn't help that for whatever reason, they're still selectable on TI2, making some levels are straight up impossible for not sharing Mario-like physics, like Redigit's characters do.
So, in conclusion, while the 99.9% of X2 users not use them they're still there to get in the way, and them being on the base game do more harm than good, even if you don't use them.

There were prior discussions among the previous devs to develop a system for drag-and-drop character packs and to provide the default ones in a slightly polished state as a compatibility package. It just hasn't been a priority. Writing about it here in case anyone on the new team wants to pick up the idea. So far characters were also held back by Defines not being split by character. I recall supermario1313 wanted to look into picking up that work in the other thread.
Point 2 immediately disqualifies them from removal. They're used rarely, yes, but rare is not 0. And the number of people who care about local multiplayer isn't particularly high either...
Point 3 would be fixed by a drag and drop system, or by just slightly refactoring the code. No need for drastic measures.
Point 4 is just an opinion.

You can check credits.xlsx for a documentation of who developed which feature.

I did have an initial estimated timeline for patch 4 back when it could've been just a hotfix, but at this point it's as Alagirez said: it'll be done when it's done.
With sprinkles of input from Proloe and me, the new owners have been hashing out specific plans for
- migrating the repo to Github,
- potentially restructuring the current setup (with all the different repos feeding into this main one) to improve maintainability, streamline the release process, and make it easier for the community to contribute to the engine.
And it's all considerably more involved than I could've anticipated with my limited knowledge of git, inexperience with AppVeyor, etc. But we've already established over the course of this thread that keeping the repo private isn't the way forward, so that extra up-front work is going to happen and I want to make sure ds, MDA, and Mega have the time they need to do it with proper care and precaution.
This is on top of however much more time is needed to get the installer issue fixed so those geddang snifits finally work properly, of course; I intend to make good on that promise.
With regard to the X2 characters, I would still like to see the drag-and-drop system and individual character reworks happen myself. There aren't any concrete plans to do those things as of now, but maybe they'll still happen down the road after X2's project direction thread/page/plan is written up? Basically just, don't count on them being a thing in the near future, but don't count them out altogether.

Very exciting news indeed! Looking forward to the repo, I think I know some people who might be interested in contributing eventually.
