Sonic the Hedgehog: Mario Edition

Sonic the Hedgehog: Mario Edition is a SMBX episode which is a recreation of Sonic the Hedgehog from the Master System. This episode features six levels, each with a hidden Chaos Emerald to get you quicker to Bowser! You can play as all 5 classic SMBX characters, with Toad replaced with Sonic and his super speed! Please note that playing as an SMBX2 character or playing with two players may break the episode.

  • Improved beginning and ending
  • Adjusted the difficulty of bosses
  • Sonic has been improved, including fire flowers and a new soundtrack
  • A few areas have been slightly adjusted (especially Labyrinth Zone)
  • Jungle Zone Act 2 now only scrolls up
  • The master star now instantly breaks the boss shield
  • Player 2 does not inherit Sonic's behaviour from player 1
  • All coins now look like SMW coins

Your episode is broken, it crashed the game the first time I tried it

I'll blame Github for that. If you download it using git clone, then it will work. I'll get a fix out asap!

You can download it now! I'm using Google Drive instead of Github because for some reason git is messing with the world map.

Okay, so after playing your episode, here are my thoughts:

I think it's a pretty neat episode to spend some time and have fun with. I really like some of the things here, like the new hud, the Sonic 1 styled exit, and the level design. Honestly, I thought the level design was good, since it was very fair, for the most part, and it's pretty reminiscent of the original Sonic's level design, in a sense of it being kinda open on some levels. The bosses are pretty neat too, although I think the difficulty in them changes drastically, I mean, the first two bosses are fun, although the first one took some time to realize what to do, but then the final boss throws a curveball and rams up the difficulty, for no reason. And another thing I'd like to mention is that the ending was very underwhelming since the game just ends, and there's no build-up to the ending.

But overall, I give it a 6.8/10

It's a pretty good episode, but nothing really stands out here other than a couple of luna.lua things added here and there

Yeah, I think the ending is anticlimactic too. Don't worry, as I will work on a version 1.1 for this which fixes some things.

It's a bit strange to see only Mario NPCs in Sonic's world. Most levels feel empty - they usually have very few enemies (espesially underwater & scrap brain) except levels with infinite fishes. I was a bit surprised to see Chargin Chucks on first two levels (and some of them were in uneasy places) and never meet any of them on last levels. All bosses are non standart though first & underwater Bowsers could be implemented more creatively. Also I noticed you removed rinka block on the final battle. Maybe it's better to return :3
[!] After final battle I got goal sign then died :?
Overall this episode has some interesting ideas but it could be much better at all.
