Character Divides

Has anyone noticed how Toad, Peach, and Link don't compare to Mario and Luigi? Link can't carry items or ride mounts, and Toad and Peach still can't ride Yoshi. How can I lessen these divides?

Yeah well Link is pretty hard to use in any kind of normal episode, and doesn't fit in with Mario storylines at all, so I'd suggest just not using him.

As for the others, they can't use Yoshi yeah but that's not too much of a problem. Yoshi can't really do anything that the other characters can't aside from eating stuff through walls. If you need the player to do that just restrict it to secret exits or something else non-required to progress. Once the player sees this they can switch characters on the world map and get that secret or something.

Link is a hard-to-use character but it is a very strong one because he can destroy bosses way faster especially with Mother Brain.

Peach is a bit slower than Mario but she is very useful with floating and her power ups by using them correctly.

Toad is the fastest character and has also very good abilities by power ups for example the double jump once he has a Leaf or Tanooki Suit.

But, how will I handle sliding slopes with Toad and Peach? I think character blocks are too "lame".

You still can use Link on Levels for example in The Invasion 2 there is a certain part where Link is perfectly manageable and it makes more sense that way too.

...if a section is needed to slide through you need to use those character Blocks in order to go along on your Level, sadly.

You maybe can do something like a Teleporter graphic surrounded from the character block so it looks more natural for you...

It's worth noting that Peach cannot spin jump, so she cannot break SMW blocks from the top like every other character. You have to find work-arounds somehow.

As for sliding slopes, that's never really required, so just let the non-Mario or Luigi player walk down the slope. It shouldn't be too difficult.

Toad can double jump with certain powerups.

Each character's limitations and features make them unique - there's no reason to try to make up for it.

With the unique characteristics of a character you could do many other gimnicks, and this is good.
