Cumulus Clouds and Bricks Tileset (v2: brick slopes)

Postby crazydev » Mon Feb 20, 2017 12:26 am

A cloudy tileset for all your levels taking place high in the sky.
SCREENSHOTS: show
v2ImageImagev1ImageImageImage
v2: With the help of *olympusmaximus* and the rest of the Discord server, I expanded the tileset.
  • Brick slopes added.
  • Transitional cloud BGO added.
Comes with:
  • Cloud tileset (Replaces SMB3 Grass and Desert tiles)
    - There are 4 different "fill" tiles: indented, smooth, big happy face, and small happy face. You can see all of them in the screenshots.
  • Brick tileset (Replaces SMB3 Cave and Desert tiles)
  • 3 Sizable tiles (Replaces SMB3 Sizable tiles)
    - One is a cloud with its fill block being the indented version; the second is a cloud with a smooth fill; the last is bricks.
  • Cloud BGO for transitioning from clouds to bricks (Replaces Metroid pillar thing)
enjoy!

Mostly they look fine, although I don't know about some of those clouds since they don't seem to fit to me.

I see. Can you explain what doesn't fit or how?

Okay, this actually looks pretty good! Although it isn't neccesarily a bad thing, literally everything is pillowshaded. Which is fine on the clouds, but the bricks look very 2D and flat IMO. I also find the cloud sizables to look very awkward due to the colour scheme.

The bricks aren't pillowshaded, but yes, i probably could have used more contrast to make it less flat.
The cloud sizables are darkened so that you know they are sizables and in the background. Maybe they could be lighter? I dunno.

You could maybe try lighting up the Cloud sizable a little (It doesn't have to be the same color as the normal clouds, just a little brighter)

Another thing I'd suggest you make are stairs for the brick tileset (Slopes don't really make a lot of sense, so I would like an alternative to them, that doesn't mean you should remove the slopes entirely, just add the stairs alongside them), as well as some bgos for both the brick (Maybe statues, fountains and the like) and cloud tileset (Small bgo clouds like the ones from the NES version of SMB3)

Alright, thanks. I will add some of these

Instead of making the sizables look like rainclouds you could also make the parts that are bluish purple in the main tileset light grey or blue on the sizables. Also, what I meant with pillowshading on the bricks is that you didn't add lighter colours of purple on the tiles looking at the top-left. Neither did you add contrasting dark colours on the tiles at the bottom-right, I suggest you fixing both, because you have a great start allready.

Also, I'd recommend that you made a bgo for the brick block, so it's possible to make the brick tileset transition into the clouds. Also, I agree with witchking that you should probably have a bit more contrast on the brick blocks, as right now it's kinda hard to tell the difference between some of the tiles.

The tileset looks good for cloud in dungeon(likely SMB3). Good work.
