Pear Tree Snow Land

Postby PixelPest » Sat Dec 26, 2015 1:29 pm

Merry Boxing Day!

This level was supposed to be the first level of my Christmas minisode that I didn't finish in time for December 25th. This was my favourite level so I decided to post it.
This is a relatively calm, easy, and linear level that takes you through a wintry pear tree forest. (There aren't any partridges though.) It uses M&L styled graphics, some of which were "borrowed" from M&L's Delightful Adventure by Darkonious, except for the pear trees, pears, and jump through platforms, made by me. It mainly uses a gimmick of falling pears (replace falling red block NPC). Try to find two 1-ups in the level. Mario and Luigi are the only allowed characters for this level.

That level looks really neat!
I'll probably end up playing it later today.

I'm in love with those trees, though the pears look kind of like waterballoons to me :^)

Unofficial Review of Pear tree snowland by Pixelpest

Gameplay (75% of the score):
Although I absolutely adore the pear gimmick. especially in combination with the snowy theme
there are some spots where the gimmick is executed rather poorly
For example here
Spoiler: show
Image
If you fail to do this in 1 try (because one of the 2 pears fell down, there is no way to pass that part
because by then the paratroopa allready commited suicide and the pears don't regenerate
forcing you to kill yourself.
this could be easily fixed however by either making the pears generators or by adding another note block
The placement of the bill blasters was good aswell as the rest of the npc-placement
(except for the suiciding paratroopa near the exit)
I didnt have problems with the easy 1-ups because it was for a christmas episode.
and they are usually not that hard
If i were you i would place some more secret stuff next time
(but this isn't neccesary, so i am not taking points for this)

Gameplay score 5.5/10

Athmosphere and graphics (25% of the score):
The Athmosphere is just STUNNING
I absolutely love the pear tree graphics
and although there was some stylemixing, none of it clashed
the music (Dire Dire Rocks) fits the level amazingly aswell as the background
there wasn't any cutoff, which is a good thing
The one thing which is rather bad is (IMO) the vases as pipes
you should have used regular pipes there (its just an opinion though)

Athmosphere score: 9.0/10

Overall score: 6.4/10

Thank you for the review. You should still be able to backtrack at the part you showed--the level is omni-directional so you should be able to play it in either direction. This means that it's always possible to go backwards when you fail a falling block section to make them re-appear.

Pear Tree Snow Land REVIEW

Pear Tree Snow Land review

Design & Gameplay: Good
+ This level is relatively fun to play. The gimmick was executed quite well and there are several positive aspects in the level. The level has a fair length considering it doesn't have a checkpoint. The level is explorable but still not confusing, which is also a good thing.
| The NPC and coin placement is mostly good, but there should've been a bit less bullet bill blasters and slightly less coins in the level, though.
- The pears only regenerate themselves via going back in the level and respawning them that way.

Atmosphere & Visuals: Good
+ The level had a decent graphical look. There is a decent amount of scenery and I didn't find any cutoffs or clashy graphics.
- The broken brick effect is a bit broken, you should recolor the effect to dark grey too. The music is unfitting too, considering the themes is a cut version of 'Dire Dire Docks'. I'd recommend using the snowman's land/cool cool mountain theme instead.

Score: 6.25/10
A relatively good level with some questionable stuff in it
Moved to 'Pretty Good'
