I understand, but I tried recoloring it and honestly I think it just makes it look even weirder.
I also tried editing it to make it look less weird, but I'm not an expert GFX designer so it kind of looked like crap.

Try making it a darker shade than the darkest shade in the sprite, but not black

Like I said on Skype last night, this looks divine! I love the wall of water in the background. Underwater with the water caving in is a nice aesthetic, and I am glad I asked for permission to use that animating background!

Get rid of the HD-ness. It doesn't work well with Mario. Also, the community generally dislikes 1x1 pixels.
