Your definition of clash and do you necessarily mind it

Postby FanofSMBX » Thu Jul 09, 2015 7:35 pm

My definition: two things that are from different game styles and colors. I think there is a spectrum on how to improve graphics: recolor, then reshaded, then redrawn in the new style (which is best).

Do I mind: For someone who is so picky about it in their own projects I don't really mind. One thing I do mind is having a lot of SMB3 recolors of other game graphics in the level, except for one graphic left unrecolored. It blends a lot better if you have more balanced mix of two games' graphics. Sometimes I wonder if people wouldn't care as much about clash and recolors if it wasn't one of the only areas where one could have total control over SMBX. I didn't mind SMB A New Beginning, one of the first episodes I play, and my first levels used custom graphics but were not so strict about game recolors. I think as I lessened interest in SMBX' mechanics and unique objects by itself, I started to focus on graphics to make it feel new and worked-on.

Sorry for the bad English, I'm tired. If someone doesn't get what I'm saying I'll try to explain better.

"Clashing" to me sounds like two or more graphics that don't combine well together, most likely due to their respective styles being too different.

I personally don't mind clashing, I'm no graphic artist to know anything about what combines well and what doesn't. However, I've observed that all of the important figures in this forum take clashing very seriously, and that's one of the main reasons why I'm so desperate about getting a spriter (the other reason is I can't draw) in order to make Cirno and the other Touhou girls actually blend in with the mostly non-custom tiles I've used. Check the current demo of my "Cirno the Fairy" episode and you'll see how badly the sprites clash with the tiles and backgrounds (not to mention the incomplete Cirno sprites, that's where I failed the hardest :( ).

Clash is when two graphics don't fit because of their colours and/or style. While most of the time I see colour clash, especially with handdrawn graphics the cathegory "style clash" has become much more apparent.

Two graphics that don't work well together for some reason (usually style/colors). Depending on how much it clashes, it can completely break the level's atmosphere, so I avoid it; if it's a minor clash I don't really mind it, though.

clash is short for clash of clans

When things don't look good together. I'd say that a lot of people have different ideas about what looks good together, and therefore just because you think something clashes doesn't mean that other people do.

I only mind it if the level has nothing else to offer.

My definition: Clash is when 2 or more different game themes collide in a section.

Do I mind it? I don't mind it, as long as the level goes well.

I have mentioned on this forum several times what the definition of clash is: two graphics that don't look good together. What game they're from doesn't matter. What style they are doesn't matter. What shading they use doesn't matter. It is based on your own personal opinion of what graphics look good together. The definition of the word isn't up for debate. I really hope I don't have to go over this again.
