I don't think they're at the end of their ropes.
But i do think they seen how popular rom hacking and programs like SMBX were and decided to make something "more" legit and make some money on it.
It's not something they can stop, so maybe they will try and outdo hacking and SMBX somehow.

This gives a lot of info about it.. specially at the end,
Takashi Tezuka who oversees mario now days had some things to say that were intriguing to me.
http://www.usgamer.net/articles/e3-2014 ... ario-maker

Here is a few quotes and so forth.

"""Update: I spoke with producer Takashi Tezuka about Mario Maker today. Speficially, I asked if the two art styles available in the show floor demo — the original Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. U — would be the extent of the looks available for level design. Will we see Super Mario Bros. 3? Super Mario World?

"Obviously, there will be other graphical styles included," Tezuka said. "And nothing's been decided yet, but I'd also like to include other graphics that aren't Mario." Would that mean that if Legend of Zelda graphics were included, the game would let you design top-down stages, I asked?

"No, it won't be top-down," he said. "It's always going to be a 2D platformer." However, players can expect more level design elements than those included on the show floor. Tezuka said he plans to integrate more enemy and object types than what appeared in the E3 demo, though he doesn't want the palette of options to become overwhelming.

Tezuka also emphasized the inspiration Mario Maker draws from Mario Paint and says that he hopes to include features similar to those of that Super NES classic, including a music composition feature. As for Internet sharing and Miiverse integration, Tezuka admits those details are still being worked out as well, but that he's mindful of players' desire to show off their level designs to friends.

"Sharing with friends is really the whole point of making levels," he said. ""

So yes.. way more coming.
I honestly look forward to it, i always felt that touch screen would be good for game making.. games.
I also hope Enterbrain who makes the RPG Maker series might put an RPG Maker on it at some point.

This is probably exactly right. It's the same kind of thing as Virtual Console. They don't want people to run ROMs on emulators, so they created, essentially, emulators of their own to compete with them and offer a more legit option. It's never going to be able to stop third party emulators/level editing tools, but from their perspective, it'll cut down on them at least a little.

The funny thing is, SMBX will NOT die at the hands of Nintendo.

When I saw Mario Maker for the first time when it was announced, it made my day. I really like the looks of it. It's not too much right now, though. However, I surely hope there is a lot more in the future than there is now. I will be looking forward to that game for sure! 2015 just feels so far from now, but I can try to help it!

Who said I was backseating? everybody was going off-topic and mods wait forever to do anything.

So I heard there were supposed to be some non Mario styles in this, think they'll do a Metroid one?

I don't think that'll happen, Metroid has WAY WAY WAY WAY different enemies than Mario does. After all, the styles are just GRAPHICS, not entire NPCs.

Exactly, whats wrong with Mario traversing through a Metroid level? Who said the enemies have to be Metroid? They could be Metroid styled at least. I dunno, I just see that sort of thing being possible.

It's possible. But knowing Nintendo, I don't think it'll happen.

It reminded me of the Zelda DLC level for Sonic Lost World, I thought if Sonic can traverse through a Zelda inspired level, why not Mario?

Well, I won't be disappointed if they don't do this, but I'm sure it'd be pretty cool.

The thing is.. he mentions putting in some things from Mario Paint.
If he puts in the Tile editor like Mario Paint had.. they could some how integrate some means for user to make graphics.
I honestly think that's a better idea anyhow.
Leave it to people to make stuff, making sprites is not that hard anyhow.
I been reading topics all over the internet about the game, and one recurring comment is.
"Include mario 2!" or.. "include mario 3!!" or.. "include mario world!"....
If they make the tools for making your own graphics, those can easily be added in by people.

I still think it's not just hacking and so forth making Nintendo do this.. i can't help but think they were looking for a theme to a new Mario Paint... like.. they been siting back going "how can we make a new Mario Paint? What could we do with a new mario paint?" .. but also i think this might be Nintendo's answer to Little Big Planet as well as Project Spark... the other consoles have their own "make your own game games" and Nintendo has not had one until this point.. so all these things and thoughts came together and made Nintendo jump on the ball.

I also just can't help but feel this will be some sort of straight sequal to Mario Paint.. even the font and screen they used looked akin to Mario Paint's title screen. Only it said Mario Maker... i bet anything that when it get's released it might be touted as "the sequel to Mario Paint"... i could be wrong on that though.
