Episode Preservation Movement

Postby UnderscoreFyreNova » Thu Dec 17, 2020 1:33 pm

As of tilde five minutes ago, I was made aware of this occurrence on Mediafire, and that raises a huge problem for older SMBX episodes. This problem would effect most all old SMBX episodes, and would make them un-installable for newer members of the community.

This, however, is why I've made this post; I'm going to begin downloading SMBX Episodes on my own, and hosting them in places where I believe they won't get smote (Google Drive, MEGA, etc.) and I'm inviting everyone to help. That's right, everyone. And you know who that includes? You. I can't do this alone (I'm only one guy!) so I'm most likely going to need the help of at least three or four people, but extra hands are always welcome.

I don't think I can do this alone, but we can do this together.

Imagine not using Google Drive or Dropbox.

On a more serious note, I would urge people to split up the work in a coordinated manner, like let's say X does Page 1, Y does Page 2 and Z does Page 3.

Or just use Github, which is generally the future of filesharing. Comes with the added benefit of advanced version control and backups, and groups can easily work on files at the same time (which is much safer than doing this on Google Drive / Dropbox, since again it has advanced version control).

Generally, it's always wise to put up mirror links for p. much anything that's meant to be a long-lived and constantly available download link.

Is Google Drive or Dropbox better for large uploads?

A long time ago I TRIED to upload an episode to Dropbox bc its download was rip, and it seemed to take forever and I gave up.

I haven't really used Dropbox for saving my projects and levels in a looong time, so I'm going to be biased if I say Google Drive is the better option. More so, you need a Google account in order to access Google Drive...

I'd like to add that maybe efforts should be made to preserve graphics and old Lunalua as well, just in case anyone wants to use those.

I've added the link to the discord in the source message, in case anyone is interested in preservation.

Excellent idea; maybe we can get on that after episode preservation is done.

I can download all the episodes and put them on my own github. (I can also give people edit access to my github just for that reason as well) I assume one can use my github site like that.

Edit: I think this should also be done to Levels and not just episodes.

Google Drive has the issue to sometimes remove content because of a fake takedown notice, Dropbox sometimes gets stuck in huge traffic downloads.

Not to mention some people don’t know they have to remove certain restrictions of authorization on google drive.

I do store some of old episodes at my home server here https://archive.wohlsoft.ru/
Seems I need to collect the rest of them. If someone would help me to collect episodes, I'll grant the FTP access to the upload folder (PM me for details, or write by Discord)

I think, I need to plug one another HDD to my home server to expand the space as my main 4TB HDD is almost full.

Many people used Mediafire for a while, and a lot of episodes was been published via Mediafire.

Don’t forget that people used sendspace which randomly deleted files time to time.

That too, and therefore some years ago was given public notes/rules to don't use sendspace, otherwise, moderators will remove/reject stuff from publication, or somthing also (please fix me if I didn't correct reminded...)

It's worth noting that Google's going to be taking a similar approach with Drive (albeit one that won't take effect until June 2021) so yeah, definitely don't rely on GDrive alone for lasting long-term file hosting.

Also peer-to-peer options were brought up in codehaus yesterday. I haven't looked into it myself yet, but aero highlighted this one specifically:

Just backed up all my releases from the past couple of years to that one. At least, all the ones I could find on my PC. I've put the CID for it into my signature. I recommend others to take similar preservation measures.

I tried preserving episodes years ago but it was difficult because many members are long gone and/or don't keep their SMBX files.

Looks like I need to move all of my files somewhere else then, I'm not about to pay for +15GB of storage.
