Feel free to tell what is your least favorite classical "Super Mario" game. Just try not to be a troll about it please!
[Edit:] I originally said the SMW was my least favorite, but i like it now, I vote for Lost Levels!

Lost Levels, without a doubt. It's just so brutally difficult and unforgiving, and to this day I still can't get past world 1. What makes it worse is that you have to beat it something like 8 times in a row to get the true ending.

Tough call between SMB1 and SMB3. Settled with the latter.

Lost Levels is just no fun! I'm all in for a fun and fair challenge, but Lost Levels bullshit level design makes you wonder what the level designers were thinking! Oh, and the SMBDX version sucks even more cause: Lost Levels plus screen crunch minus the enemy bounce thing minus Luigi's high jump = shit time!

I do believe that Super Mario 64 qualifies as a classic at 20 years old since the original post. Not that it's my least favorite; it's near the top for me, though it's fair to include that as a choice.
I think about Super Mario Land 1 for the artwork or music (including remixes), and not so much for the game itself. I couldn't get into it, but I do like the sequels.

Probably SMB1 or SMB2.

In SMW, you had a reserve powerup, so it needed to have the same damage system as SMB1 so mario had a maximum HP of 3 (like in SMB3).

Actually in you only needed to beat the game 8 times in the original version, in the all-stars you only needed to finish the game once to unlock the secret worlds.

Super Mario 64 is a 3-D Mario classic, but this topic is for the 2-D classic Mario games. But believe it or not, I love Mario 64 back when I was little!

it's easily SMB: Deluxe because I was never a fan of 4x times small sized gameplay screens.

Any particular reason? The physics do a good job of rewarding momentum while allowing for more precise platforming than Mario 1, the new enemies do a good job of filling out the roster and giving each world a unique feel, the inventory gives a good risk-reward feeling, the new suits give a better incentive to hunt for stuff than just coins (I don't recall SMB1 having any powerups in bonus rooms), and the NES graphics have a cool style going with the faded cartoon-like effect that feels more refined than SMB1.

SMB1 had two power-up bonus rooms. One appeared in 3-1, and the other one appeared both in 4-1 and 6-2.

It it's only for the 2-D ones, then why didn't you tell us so in the OP?
Also lmao no votes for wario so far.

Wario is literally who? Who has played Wario Land?
I've played Wario Land 2 (100%'d it at that.) but not Super Mario Land 3, so Iunno.
If I had to vote though it would totally be for either SMBDX, SML2, or SML3 if I knew how it was like. Mainly because I think they are not as, how you say, exciting or accessible platformers with either slow platforming or the constrained screen space making it hard to see what's coming up. Those are both really good reasons why it'd be on the bottom of the mario list for me.

Lost Devels. definitely
There are like the double of a normal Mario game world count (And,please Nintendo, using letters after the 8?how imaginative, wynaut only saying World 9-1 instead of A-1?)not counting 64,that's not exactly retro because you might play the same level various times to get the game at 100% with all the stars, getting back to LL,it gets infinite and difficult each single level.
If beating Bowser was difficult,i don't imagine fighting it worst like 10 more times.
''we show you a more difficult quest''...
A real more difficult quest.

Or getting all 100's in Yoshi's Island. Not too retro either, is it...?
