Another 64-Style Adventure (A64SA) [v1.1 released!]

Postby willie870307 » Sun Nov 17, 2019 3:26 am

Here it is, my latest episode. Actually it was release on my YouTube channel last year, but I was too lazy to post a topic on this forums. (Sorry about that!)
But there will be an updated version of this episode, which will be available very soon, so I decided to post a topic this time.

Image

This episodes was inspired by two of my favorite game, Super Mario 64 and Paper Mario (N64). I spent over 3 years to make this. This could be the best episode I’ve ever made!

Story
Spoiler: show
Princess Peach told Mario that there were some Toads missing last month, and ask Mario to figure what was happened. Soon after that, she was kidnapped by Bowser...yet again! Mario cannot reach Bowser’s Castle easily since it’s way above the sky. He have to collect power stars, so that he may find the way to rescue the princess!

Feature (For v1.0)
1. The gameplay is similar to Super Mario 64, you have to collect Power Stars to progress.
2. There are a total of 80 Power Stars in the episode, which are split between 12 different style of courses and Toad Town.
3. Toad Town is the hub level in this episode, you can go to the courses through the specific pipe or door. There are some Power Stars in the town, and you don't want to miss them!
4. As you progress, there will be more character playable: Luigi and Toad, to be exact.
5. Princess Peach also has her adventure, just like Paper Mario 64.
6. Challenge House is where you can get the last 2 stars.
7. Playtime: 3+ hours

The structure of the course
Spoiler: show
You will start the course at the "Main Section". After deciding which star you want to get, enter the specific pipe or door and you will be warp to the "Sub Section", where you can get the corresponding star.
Once you're at the sub section, you cannot go back to the main section. After you get the star, you will be warp back to Toad Town, and you have to enter the course again to get another star until you get all 6 stars. Therefore, if you want to clear the entire course, you have to enter the course at least 6 times.
If the scale of the main section is too big, there will be a checkpoint available. Note that the checkpoint won't be available at the sub section!
If you lose your life, you will restart either at the beginning of the course or the checkpoint.
There is a mushroom generator at the beginning of the course.

How to collect Power Stars
There are 6 stars in each courses which are numbered (Star 1~Star 6). The first 5 stars can be obtained out of order, while the sixth star cannot be obtained until you get the first 5 stars.
Some stars require specific character to get. If you want to know the detail, ask the pink bomb-omb at the beginning of the course.

Below is how you get each star:
Spoiler: show
Star 1: Just try to find the star. Usually at the end of the section.
Star 2: You have to trigger the switch (or switch blocks) to get the star.
Star 3: Collect all 8 red coins at the section.
Star 4: Hit the gray question block, and get the star within limited amount of time.
Star 5: Collect all 100 coins at the section.
Star 6: Defeat the boss.

There's more? (v1.1)
There will be downloadable content available near the future. New challenges will be unlocked, with additional 20 stars to get.
You have to finish the main game (that is, collect 80 stars) to unlock new challenge. All new levels can be accessed via Challenge House once you download the updated version (v1.1).
The save file played on v1.0 can also be used on v1.1.

More details:
Spoiler: show
A new world “Secret Challenge Area” can be accessible. It consists of 3 different types of challenge and a secret boss battle. Get all stars to prove that you are a super player!
A new mode “Hidden Warp Challenge” will be available. Find all 10 hidden, invisible warps to get the stars as reward. You can enter them like pipes. Look at the hints and try to find them!

Which version of SMBX should I use to play? (2019/11/19 Updated)
1.3 or 1.3.0.1: Playable, but not recommended. You might be able to bring shoes back to Toad Town, which I don't wish to happen.
1.3.0.2: Playable, highly recommended. Because I used this version to make the episode even though I didn't use LunaLua.
1.4.x: Do not use it. Unless you want to play the intro level every time the game loaded.
2.0.0: Not fully tested, but I think it's playable form start to finish.

Trailer (Chinese subtitle)
Even though it's Chinese subtitle, most details are already covered above. Just enjoy some demonstration!

Why do you recommend 1.3.0.2, a somewhat deprecated version that basically noone uses anymore? Did you use LunaDLL?

If you use 1.3 or 1.3.0.1, you can bring shoes out after complete a level even though you enter a "No-Yoshi" warp, which I don't wish to happen.
This property was discovered after I almost finish all levels, and I didn't want to make big adjustment because of that.
Another reason is that this episode was made by 1.3.0.2, even though I did not use LunaLua or LunaDLL. This version runs stabler for me.
So...you can still play it with 1.3 or 1.3.0.1, but you may encounter the problem mentioned above. You still can finish the episode, though.
Oh, and do not use 1.4.x, no matter what! Or you will be forced to play the intro level every time you load the game!

You sound like you're not aware of SMBX2. Just recommend that.

I know SMBX2, and played it several times, but I'm not used to design levels on it. I might use it to make my next episode, though.
You can to try this episode on SMBX2 and tell me if that shoes problem occur or not.

Since you have an update planned, I'll just wait for it. Are there any levels that are specifically designed around shoes?

Yes, but not much. In fact, most quests that require shoes or Yoshi are designed that you have to detach them in order to get the star.
Since there's more than one week before the release of updated version, I can still make some small adjustment. So feel free to tell me if you have any suggestion. :)
By the way, thanks for the advice about SMBX2. I know it's better than legacy editor, but I need time to get used to it. That's why I still made this on the legacy one.

Edit:
Okay, I just did a quick test about shoes on SMBX2. Seems that the problem didn't occurred on the latest version of SMBX2. So...I guess you're right!
I'll edit the topic about version later today.

Regarding shoes, I'd probably remove the "No Yoshi" flag altogether. You're making clear that shoes aren't supposed to be used in Toad Town so most casual players won't use them there, and for speedrunning it could allow for some pretty cool timesaver tricks (unless we're talking about a Lakitu's Shoe which would be cheap and boring).

I have a question, this is because it's not compatible with these unofficial versions, even though it has been converted?

As of now it's not encouraged to play 1.3 content in 1.4, regardless if it works. It looks like the creator tried and did not succeed.

Also thanks for the bump, I forgot about this episode.
