Adding graphics is a bit more complicated than replacing them, but I'll try to explain how it works.

First, you have to essentially tell SMBX that the graphic even exists.
You can find useful files in the folder SMBX2/data/_templates that you can use for this. Specifically the ones called block-n, npc-n and background-n. Don't worry about the .lua files in there, you only need the text file and the .ini file (which is the one with the gear symbol) for the block/BGO/NPC you want to add. Copy those to your level's graphics folder together with the graphic you want to add. In the graphics folder, replace the "n" with any number between 751 and 1000. Your .ini file and your text file should have the same name for each block/BGO/NPC.
Here's an example:
Image

Next, you go into the .ini file. You replace "Dummy.png" after "image" with the name of your graphic, so for example graphic.png. You can also add a name, group and category to your graphic so you can easily look for it in the editor. You can also adjust the other settings.

The text file is used to change the properties of your block/BGO/NPC. In here, you can change stuff like the priority of a BGO, the speed of an NPC, the light that a block emits etc.

Now, in the PGE editor, you can find the graphic by opening the Search item box and search for the name you put in the .ini file. If you have multiple custom graphics and you want to use them in one tileset, you can create one in the Tileset item box in the "Custom" tab.
