The Great Adventure (Contest 5 Entry)

Postby Valtteri » Thu Jun 12, 2014 2:35 pm

I don't even remember what it placed. It wasn't my best contest level. But it was requested and I thought I'd post it. It's not a bad level. It's a very different level, you know! It gives you different tasks and each gives you a star. The judges in contest 5 just couldn't handle it. B)

I've encountered a bug. If an enemy goes off screen in the cool gang fight, the level becomes uncompletible.

I want to review that. And I will. You will have one until wednesday.

EDIT: Sorry about the delay. I will send the review friday.
Spoiler: show
It's a really cool idea with "vanilla design". We have in this several Mario games + Tetris. It's a really good idea and I really liked the concept of the five stars. Really interesting idea. Not so organized, actually, but it's a really gracious level. The multiple paths and the things interconnected is a really perfect thing in this level. And this have a good replay value.

Gameplay - 4.05/5
Really good gameplay, you can switch between the five players and we have a good explorative value. A really nostalgic gameplay. And with a interesting system, if isn't common in another levels. It would be better if it were not so confusing in some parts. You can do some improvements.

Design/Placement - 3.70/5

Design:
It's an acceptable level. I really liked the system and how you switch between different Mario games (SMB, SMB2, SMB3, SMW). It's good and this have a nostalgic design. I really liked the explorative value in this level too. I just think you can do a polishment in this to expand the quality of this level and leave it less confusing.

Placement:
Without major problems with this. I just think you can remove some enemies in some parts to make some parts easier. But this have an acceptable amount of NPCs. I just don't liked the Bowser section part, when you find Bowser and you have to kill him. If you go back for the another section, you still will heard the sound effects. And you just will have the star when you kill Bowser and you need (to kill him more easily) a Hammer Suit.

Atmosphere - 3.85/5
Really nostalgic. Really atmospheric. You will alternate between several different sections with different themes (cavern, pipe cavern, ghost house) and different tilesets from Mario games (and Tetris). I really liked the Tetris section, even you have to be careful with the falling blocks. But this have a really good vibe. We don't need so much custom or original tilesets to do a great atmosphere. Good work with the "vanilla level".

Aesthetics - 4.35/5
Everything is well organized, structured, with a perfect system... It's probably the best point in the level: The aesthetics. I really liked how you do that. The design is really acceptable for the organization of the level, all the sections have a good system; The scenario is good in all the section (I think). At least, it's a organized vanilla level.

Overall - 15.95/20 or 7.975/10
