Messed-Up Mario Bros: 1-1

They're not that bad, but they're not that good either.

Messed-Up Mario Bros: 1-1

Postby HenryRichard » Sat May 24, 2014 10:30 am

I made an (almost) perfect recreation of SMB1's World 1-1. Then, I messed it up. Meaning I added annoying little things here and there that don't exactly fit. Kinda like NSMBWII's Coin-2 Level, except more deadly. I will have all the things that I did to the level in a spoiler, so don't read it before you play the level for the best experience.
Spoiler: show
-The first few blocks try to smash you if you hit them
-The first two pipes try to trap you
-A giant hammer will squash you if you go into the area between the last two pipes before the 1-UP.
-The underground warp is significantly more annoying.
-Invisible blocks before the first gap.
-A pillar of lava springs up at you if you go under the bricks right after the first gap.
-Random out-of-place SMW koopa that talks.
-The first two block half-pyramids chase you when you aren't looking.
-The floor changes to lava near the end.
-If you talk to me at the end, I flood the room with lava.
One little tip though: I never trap you so you can't get out unless I kill you. Keep that in mind. Also, look for invisible blocks! They oftentimes save you!

Kinda, sorta, not really, maybe. I didn't put in any weird graphics, odd music, or randomly drawn backgrounds. Though it's not exactly a normal level either. You should probably just play it to see what I mean.

Seems fun, I'll do a review of it after I play it.

This not a joke level, this is a troll/hard level.

I like this type of level. You can make a episode called Super Mario Bros 1.5: Bowser Madness.

Did I Wanna Be the Guy (that infamous kaizo game) inspire you do make this level?

Visual Appeal
From the starting point, it seems you're in a starting Metroid kind of room that actually looks pretty good, and your character sprite (of Yoshi holding what appears to be a Minecraft styled axe) which also looks decent, is in this Metroid room. Now, first, right off the bat is the pipe that changes colors from SMW yellow pipe in the starting room to the SMB1 green one. It's a nitpick, but it still matters. Now, looking at the 1-1 section in the editor, it looks pretty legit, which is a great thing. The few SMW items, like the koopa and other things (not pointing out the traps ;)) don't quite fit, but that's not all your fault. Although this may be mostly opinion, I don't think the BGO going over another BGO is a good idea since it can look messy as well as create risk for BGO overlapping, which creates cutoff. The last SMB1 castle room looks pretty good as an SMB1 themed area. In general, it appears to me you didn't use any custom graphics other than for one trap as well as your custom character, so props to that.
5/10

Design
I really liked the quite accurate style of the classic 1-1 attempt used for this level. Since it was built around the traps you made in the level, it isn't COMPLETELY accurate, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Now, the traps tend to take away some of the quality designs, and I'll explain in a bit. It's a nice linear and short level, since it's literally 1-1 with cheap traps, but that's also what's wrong with it. I'd say the parts that shined were everywhere besides the main section: The beginning room, the bonus room, and the castle room. The bonus room had an incredibly basic but clever idea to get back out, and the castle was expected to be like a classical SMB1 styled castle.
5/10

Gameplay
This is the part where the level really falls apart. You really nailed the traps gimmick to it, but it's not exactly a widespread accepted type of level theme in the community, neither is it original, since you see it in a lot of kaizo 2D platformers you'd see someone like Pewdiepie play. The traps were nonetheless well executed, but (especially the 2nd one) got pretty tiring after a while when I constantly died from the other ones and lost my patience. In general, well executed gimmick, but that's in some ways not a good thing. (I'll still give you points)
4/10

Music
I really hate the item room music used in the first and last section; it sounds incredibly ugly. I really would have appreciated it if you used the SMB1 castle theme for the castle section and the SMB3 underground for the Metroid section just because they both sound a LOT better. The SMB1 music goes nicely with the theme, but when the traps start getting into place, it almost sounds unfitting.
3/10

In general, it was more or less a "meh" type of level.
