Mole Beach Vacation (UPDATED)

Postby SecondScolipede » Mon Dec 28, 2015 11:36 pm

I have to be honest, when I started making this, I didn't like the tileset. I thought it didn't fit with all of the other SMW things. I slowly got attatched to it though, and I think I did a good job of making it fit in. The tileset itself was made by henryrichard.
*The "Boss" was made by Bloodelf300
*The palm trees were made by SilverDeoxys
*The music is "Blissful" from De Blob
Spoiler: show

This is the final and most recent version of the level. Although I still prefer the old graphics better, this fits better with SMW.

if those hills had black outlines, this level would look beautiful.

Should I add black outlines on the areas that show separation of the three levels of shading? Or should i not?

Here's a definition of the word 'clad' for ya; 1. To sheathe or cover (a metal) with a metal.
2. To cover with a protective or insulating layer of other material. So unless the moles are creating a protective layer over the ground, which seems very unlikely, this level name doesn't really make much sense. The level itself was rather enjoyable, though.

Sorry if I sound impatient, but I would like at least some specific feedback soon. I know there are many older levels than this (Including another beach level I made) that have yet to get reviews, all i just want is some feedback on good parts and parts that (may) need to change.

Review of Mole Beach Vacation

Level Design and Gameplay (weighed 70%): 3.1/10
This level was actually a bit fun to play, although it had many design issues. There were only two power-ups in the entire level and one of them was invisible. Coin placement also needs a lot of improvement; they should be spread out instead of clumped together. The last third of level didn't have coins at all, making it seem a little bare in that sense. However the unkindly enemy spam made up for this. The first quarter of the level was kind of bare, but the rest was a little overcrowded. Also, the normal SMW trees near the checkpoint somewhat ruined the atmosphere. The boss battle was pretty standard; a birdo reskin with a volcano lotus. Although it wasnt anything special, it was a good idea to use the Mole-in-the-Tank from NSMBDS in this level, and the bossfight was challenging. The secret way was kind of good, although the block with the vine in it was really difficult to get on top of as Mario, and all the secret gives you is a power-up. It also makes the player backtrack a bit, which wasn't good. This level was interesting to play overall, the it just had a lot of aesthetic and design issues.

Graphics and Sound (weighed 30%): 4.7/10
The music in this level was an okay fit, but an unusual choice. I think a more SMW soundfont track would have worked much better. It also would have helped if the music would change when the player enters the boss battle, since it is in the same section as the rest of the level. It took me a few seconds to realize what was actually going on before it clicked. The hills are an interesting graphic, although the background doesn't fit with them; nor do the palm trees. The Tanooki blocks didn't look great either in the level.

Overall: 3.58 (Average)
