Mushroom Plains (First level of Mushroom Kingdom Apocalypse)

Postby PROX » Sat Sep 26, 2015 1:34 am

Well here it is. It's pretty short because it's the first level of the episode. There is a star coin gimmick and a few other interesting surprises. ENJOY!! I will release the tileset used in a future update in my graphics pack, so it would be greatly appreciated if it wasn't used until then. Thx.

EDIT: there was a fatal flaw in the earlier version of the level, so I updated the download link.

the SMW coins didn't fit with SMB3 styled levels, unless you recolor them with SMB3 palette.....
and the design looks good, though.

yeah they do, not everything has to be the same style in order for it to fit. It all depends on the color scheme of the level itself. As far as palettes go with the level, I kinda used my own. I don't usually follow a certain palette when making tilesets. If you REALLY want me to though, I will recolor them or possibly make different coins in general.

It looks quite good. Did you make the tileset yourself? It immediately reminded me of the world map tiles from Luigi's Fight for the Mushroom Kingdom. Might unofficially review this at some point but will definitely play through it too ASAP. Can't wait for the full episode to arrive!

At the beginning of section 2 where the first rising platform is, you really need to fix that. If you run to it instead of jump on it, it rises without even letting you get on the platform, causing the level to be impossible. Otherwise I didn't notice any real flaws.

Mushroom Plains review

Design & Gameplay: 8/10 (counts 70%)
In my opinion, this is a nice level. The difficult is fair for a W1 level and I'm not going to complain about the length either. The overall fun factor is p. high and the level also has some replay value as I noticed. The star coin placements are also good for a first level of a game. The main placements are also good and I like what you did around the checkpoint.
Maybe the level has fair W1 difficulty, but it rather has mid world 1 difficulty instead of level 1. (it's a very little flaw anyway)

Atmosphere & Visuals: 9/10 (counts 30%)
This level had a calm grassland atmosphere. The music fits the level well and the background object amount is fair. I also haven't found any graphical bugs like clash, cutoffs or broken effects. The overall atmospheric feeling is happy, calm and simply great.

Score: 8.3/10
Pretty nice and calm grassland level

Thx for the review, I think that's a pretty fair score.
