Doomsday (Working Progress) LOOKING FOR BETA TESTERS

Postby Aulphexia » Sun May 03, 2015 6:00 pm

THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM IS REACHING ITS DEMISE!
All hell has broken loose in Toad Town. The koopas have come to invade once again, only this time, they intend to lay waste on everyone and everything they hold dear, leaving behind no survivors. After marking their territory, they then fly away to Peach's Castle to come and kidnap her again, but this time, they intend on ending her for once and for all...

Rising from the ashes of the deceased Toad Town, Mario chases the koopas to the castle to try and stop them, but unfortunately, all is too late when he gets there to hear an airship containing the screams of the princess flying away. Not long after the princess is gone, Mario comes across a tall black tower with a giant star attached to it, in which he learns is named the "Star Keep", a tower which holds the power stars needed to unlock the gateway to the dark world, which is apparently where the princess was taken to be slaughtered. Unfortunately, after the invasion, the power stars ended up being scattered over 16 different worlds outside of the Mushroom Kingdom. Now, Mario must venture fourth across these worlds, on what is the most dangerous, most intense, and possibly very last quest he will ever venture...

Just so you get a taste on what this game has to offer, I've gone and released a demo. In this demo version of the game, we follow Mario's journey through the deserted and darkened lands of the Mushroom Kingdom, from the destruction of Toad Town to Peach's Castle and discovering the Star Keep. Intro level is pretty crap, but I'll improve on that for the full game. I will be starting work on the rest of the game as soon as possible.

Download Link Download and play, and let me know what you think of the story so far. The kingdom needs you more than ever.

Beta Testers (three positions remain)

The First World is just about ready to be tested so I need you peeps to help me out.
If you'd be interested to test it out and let me know if it could be improved then let me know either on this thread or via PM. You should then receive a PM within a day or two with the levels you've been assigned to test.

A couple of rules to help make people's lives easier
1. When you get the download link to the levels you will be given a deadline in which you need to PM me back with your critiques by. If you don't send me a critique by the deadline, you will be fired. Exceptions may be made if you let me know it's not possible to do so by the deadline as long as you give reasons.
2. If I happen to find any of my levels up on YouTube, or if you post a download link somewhere, I will find you, and I will fire you. And if I can't find out who posted it, I will fire all of you. So if you happen to post something online, be a decent person and own up so no innocent soul gets devoured.

That's about it, let me know if you're interested.

Downloading. The screens your provided have super eyecandy from Planet X...

But I do recommend one thing, please credit the people who made the custom graphics. They look really nice, and I'm pretty sure people would love to know where they came from. I also think that the graphic maker would be very appreciative regardless if asked for credit or not.

Edit: I beat the game, and it's in the credits of the game.

*community face palms cause I'm a dumbass*

This is actually a really interesting project. The level design is not to easy enough to be hard, but is challenging in some places where it shouldn't. I guess this would fall under the "Semi-HardCore" episode category.

The story the Toads offered where interesting, and I never skipped a line. I was in love with Toads, and everytime I say a dead Toad bleeding to death. (Almost every second of the game has gore and dead Toads. If you get queasy about this, then I recommend not downloading this map...sorry.)

I'm really excited for the project's official golden (final) release. When I beat the demo, I was dying for more levels. It was a super amazing demo to play, and I hope this becomes the next Valtteri Island big episode on the forums. I have no idea why the entire community hasn't downloaded this map yet.

I give it no rating though. It's not really that fair to rate a game before it's final release. You never know, this episode may come out during the summer and bomb horribly. But so far, It's awesome. Keep up the good work. ;)

Cheers man. :) It's been great working on what I've done and I'm pretty pleased with how it's turned out thus far. I hope I can keep that goodness up for the rest of it.

I think the credits of the game are the same for every SMBX game though to be honest...but you're right. I was well into using the custom graphics that I never really kept track of who made which graphics. Think I better search through all the graphics and write down the names, maybe I could then give credit in the full release. ;)

Don't worry, the rest of the game shouldn't be so gory (although the very last world is debatable :P).

I highly doubt I'll be getting it done by Summer to be honest, got quite a lot of commitments like College, but I'm hoping to get it done before 2039. But I'll work on it and get it done as soon as I can, I'll keep you updated on where I'm at.

About graphics, some like the toads in screen 7 were made in MS Paint (I assume) and saved a gif, making them blurry. You can fix this using Paint.net instead.
And about dead toads graphics, I know that Elbow made a dead toad graphic that can be very useful and it's probably in his graphic pack. If not, try to search the episode "Super Mario Eternal Chaos, they're surely there.

Well, I've downloaded that particular graphics pack. While there are some pretty interesting graphics I might consider using, I didn't come across any dead toads in the pack. :| And I was unable to come across the Eternal chaos episode either. :(

And as for Paint.net, unable to install that as that requires a Windows 7 at the least, and I'm on an XP...yup. There's also photoshop but I really can't be arsed to waste my money on that. I should be getting an upgrade over Summer sometime, as the episode is not due to be finished then I shan't worry about it for now. For now, I'm currently starting work on the first of the 16 worlds.

I have just completed work on the first world (Spiky Hilltops) and am now hiring beta testers. Check out my first post for more information on how to apply.

Meanwhile, a few screenshots from the world.

The project looks interesting, edgy and has a decent amount of variety, but let me give you a little advice:

Never make custom graphics in Microsoft Paint because they make 1x1 pixels and it would look ugly on 2x2 pixels. Try Paint.NET. It's miles better and saves custom graphics with 2x2 pixels, rather than 1x1 pixels.

This aside, the 1st World looks beautiful and original (because it's SMB2 rather than SMB3) with good-looking level design (judging by the screenshots).

Yes I am. I've gone so long without anybody showing interest in testing but now it seems I have two willing tributes. :-D

I'll send you a link Friday sometime, at the moment I am away without any use of laptop.
Other people are welcome to test aswell if they're interested.

I have an alternative: when you finish making your custom graphic, save it as a PNG file, then use an online converter like this to convert it to a GIF. That way, your sprite-swaps won't be grainy, and you won't have to deal with people pestering you to use Paint.net.
