From a request of PaperPlayerX I made these. Everything is SMB3 restyled (or at least attempted to be so). I also extended the GFX.

ITS TOTALLY NOT LIKE I WAS MAKING AND RIPPING CAVESTORY STUFF MYSELF!!!!!! But seriously though, it looks nice.

However, I'd like to ask, what background objects would work well with these graphics, per say?

I could maybe rip some of the original Cave Story BGOs if you want to, or maybe some rock BGOs recolored in the colors of the rocks here.

Umm...if you really want to do that, that would be fine.
I've actually already started making the level I wanted to make with these. It's an auto-scrolling level, so it should be extra fun.

Also, another thing I should note, the Press NPC needs a death effect. It's as simple as the regular sprite upside down (preferably where the eye is closed, or maybe half open).

Wow, this looks great! I can see it being used for a lot of stuff, not just Cave Story levels. In fact, with the right recoloring, this could be a nice underwater ruins tileset.
